Electricity grid upgrades are central to Europe's future energy security and competitiveness.
To achieve this, it needs to:
1️⃣ Give national regulators a statutory mandate for the energy transition.
2️⃣ Create independent system operators and planners (ISOPs) to oversee grid planning in the public

Important new legal analysis for @umwelthilfe.bsky.social concludes that the German government's planned 20GW gas plants is incompatible with EU state aid law ⛔

The Commission must scrutinise this costly fossil hand-out, which would add billions to energy bills. www.handelsblatt.com/politik/deut...

⚡ Europe’s clean energy transition can only move as fast as its electricity grids.

But outdated regulation and limited oversight are slowing things down. RAP and @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social propose two urgent reforms for national governments to make grids fit for the energy transition.👇

Greenpeace activists scale power station’s 75-metre chimney stacks to protest ‘The Great Gas Rip-Off’ - Greenpeace UK Campaigners demand energy reforms to stop expensive gas from setting electricity prices and pushing up bills.

👏 @greenpeaceuk.bsky.social for exposing the gas rip-off! Gas was just 30% of UK power last year but glas plants set prices 97% of the time.
That's how 2 plants made £18m in 3 hrs last winter.
Time to stop rigging energy in favour of fossil fuels!

‘Super battery’ schemes will store green power and save consumers money – Ofgem The regulator announced 77 long duration energy storage projects progressing to the final assessment stage of a ‘cap and floor’ support scheme.

In 🇬🇧, 77 long duration storage schemes, totalling 28.7GW, have been identified for a programme to use energy smartly & support energy resilience.

Alongside renewables & flexible energy use, this could go a long way towards displacing UK's 37GW gas plant fleet🔋

The Nottinghamshire gas plant they climbed is owned by German energy giant RWE - who has raked in over £1BN of 'capacity market' gas plant contracts, paid for via British energy bills.

RWE is now lobbying for similar mechanisms to be set up in Germany..

Soaring US power auction prices set to spur new projects Price jumps in several U.S. capacity markets signal greater revenue opportunities for power plant developers as AI demand squeezes the market and increases energy costs for consumers.

In the US, capacity auction prices - paid via costs passed on to consumers by utilities - are set to soar off the back of rocketing energy demand from data centres.

Hardly seems fair that household energy bills will be used to help line the pockets of tech giants.

There is huge potential here for energy bill savings - but only if the UK acts on the recommendations.

Heat pumps do come with a higher up-front cost - but maximising running cost savings unlocks more options to finance those upfront costs and deliver long-term savings
