It’s yet another reminder you have to do more with less to make it!

I’ve just looked through over 30 AC adapters I have around my desk. Not a single one matches the 19V 4.74A I need for this NUC. And none are close enough to work. Where did I put that thing‽‽ The ugly side of a #homelab

Ahhh, yes. That panicked feeling when your internet goes down, and you recall unplugging an unlabeled raspberry pi in your own networking closet that turns out is your updated Pi-Hole server.

Remember kids, it’s always DNS.

A photo of my old hot end and nozzle from my AnkerMake M5. It has a ridiculous amount of melted filament stuck on the block and the nozzle. Actually, I can only assume there is a nozzle under there. I can’t see it at all. There’s also a layer of fine dust coating everything.

I’m replacing the hot end (but I couldn’t find the better all metal hot end anywhere, boooo) with a new one, and putting on a new DiamondBack nozzle. That should fix a lot of the issues I’ve been having.

Well, the 3D printing issues anyway. I still have a ton of other issues.

No idea why I’ve been having issues with my 3D prints. #3dprinting #ankermakem5 #eufymakem5

An iPad screen shot of the Windows Server 2022 installer. It’s running in a console window of Proxmox, over a Tailscale connection from my hotel to my lab network at home, which was ridiculously easy to set up. I cannot begin to describe to you how much it hurts my soul to install Windows anywhere in my lab, but it will be good experience I suppose. I’ve never heard of a corporation using Red Hat IdM for its main authentication management. Anyway, it will be fun!

Homelab update! Nutanix wasn’t it. Didn’t like my hardware. So I’m running @proxmox.bsky.social And in this screenshot, I’m in a hotel on an iPad Pro using @tailscale.com to get to my lab, and installing Windows Server 2022 for AD/ DNS/ DHCP for the lab. It’s surreal how seamless Tailscale works.

All of the wasted PETG material I pulled from the model. This is not quite the support system I needed.

A photo of an AnkerMake build plate with the upper and lower halves of a Raspberry Pi case in black PETG. The smaller base on the right was set up correctly. The upper half on the left however is sitting on top of a half inch mess of supports because I failed to ensure it was sitting on the axis before I printed it. That’s going to be fun to clean up. Luckily it’s getting stuffed into the back of the printer enclosure so niceness isn’t a factor.

When you import two 3d models at once and forget to make sure they both start on the bed. #orcaslicer #ankermakem5 #3dprintermistakes

I’m just doing low key things. @vanessak.bsky.social has her Grace cosplay (from @ibcomics.bsky.social) on Saturday and then low key the other days I think?

The install failed after booting successfully from all of those. But Rufus on my work Windows laptop? Worked first time. That feels targeted. I shouldn’t need a Windows host to make your thumb drive. Anyway, we’ll be at LA ComicCon this weekend so next update will probably be Monday. Yay!

Dashboard of my new three node Nutanix CE cluster. I know what a handful of these things are but it’s mostly foreign after a career in VMWare. There are some errors and warnings that I’ll dive into tomorrow.

Homelab day 3: it’s alive! The SFP model arrives so I was able to connect the lab switch to the router and configure that. Next frustration was that there’s apparently no way to write the Nutanix ISO to a USB drive successfully in macOS. Using dd don’t work. balenaEtcher. UNetBootIn didn’t work.

So for now, I’ll be waiting for the Trendnet 1g SFP RJ45 module to get here tomorrow it looks like. I’ll probably still include that router though to isolate the cluster. Plus I know nothing about routerOS so that’s fun.

A partial view of a messy home lab deal. An 8U 10” rack is in the forefront, with three Minisforum MS-01 computers and a Trendnet 8 port 10g switch. There are two highlighter green DAC cables coming from the back of each server to the 10g switch, nicely cable-tied. A failed boot of the Nutanix CE installer sits on an LCD screen in the background.

Homelab adventures day 2: I thought I had a workaround when I found a Mikrotik Hex S router with an SFP port in one of my drawers. I used one of the DAC cables I have for the servers, but that didn’t play well with the Trendnet 10g switch. I was hoping they would auto-negotiate to 1g.

I wouldn’t even go that far. I just want the President to be humble enough to have (and listen to) smart advisors. I get that no one can know everything, but the smart ones know what they don’t know and will seek out the appropriate counsel.

The MS-01 on paper looked fantastic for this project, but this is already becoming a problem. Next update I guess Wednesday when that SFP+ module shows up.

And the install fails without an active connection (also really?? How would I install it on an air-gapped network?), so now I have to order an RJ45 SFP+ module to connect my 10g and 2.5g switches (at 1g of course *headdesk*) so these can all access the internet and I can get Nutanix installed.

Home lab adventures: Day 1 installing a three node Nutanix cluster onto Minisforum MS-01 hosts failed miserably. No Intel 2.5Gb drivers (really?!), so my initial idea of bonding the two 10g NICs for inter-cluster comms and using the 2.5g for external is now scrapped.

I’m 90% Apple, with a handful of RHEL/ Rocky hosts and a couple of Kali. Oh, and Raspberry Pi OS. (And for just a little bit longer a venerable Gentoo server I originally built over twenty years ago, which is getting replaced with Rocky soon.)
