4️⃣ Ignoring rebel governance risks blind spots in climate assessments and resource allocation.

Yet engagement poses ethical and legal dilemmas, including legitimizing armed groups or violating sovereignty.

3️⃣ Environmental stresses like drought or agricultural collapse make grievances worse, making space for rebel groups to exert authority.

Somalia's Al-Shabaab is a good example. They've imposed bans on charcoal to address degradation—but their enforcement is coercive, to put it mildly.

2️⃣ These actions aren't purely altruistic.

Rebel groups are making money, gaining political influence, and gathering civilian support by being better stewards than government.

Interestingly, they also fill critical gaps left by weak states, which enhances local resilience to climate impacts.

1️⃣ Nearly half of rebel groups active since 1989 have engaged in environmental governance—regulating land, water, forests, and even climate displacement.

I'm talking Taliban's water projects (although not rebels but the larger point stands) to former FARC members protecting forests in Columbia.
