A chess board with the same set up as the original medieval illustration.
It looks like the game is still in the early stages. A lot of pawn moves, but I think that might have been more common in #medieval #chess.
And the engine says that white as a tiny bit of an advantage.

What a cute #dragon in the #margins of the #medieval #manuscript BnF Fr. 2810 from 1410/1412, which belonged to John the Fearless.

Ah that's interesting. I suppose that there are many factors at play that determine if a revival of the process was even attempted.

Very interesting. Could you add the time it took until the failed attempts were put to rest? Or did they mainly trail off?

A figure in a late medieval manuscript drawn on a margin. They are pulling a missing piece of text on a rope and pointing to a place where it should be inserted.
Mistakes happen! If you forget to insert that one sentence in a paragraph the solution is easy. Just draw a dude in a hood and he will pull the missing text to the right place with a piece of rope!

The EM-Dash sponsor is great. Their website was super helpful and the check out process worked well. Some might say to well.

Little men with lances and bows, riding rams are attacking cranes which are taller then them.
I just found this beautiful illustration of "Pygmies" going to war with the cranes in the #Cosmographia by #SebastianMünster from 1550.
He would be one of the last persons to follow the #medieval tradition regarding the "Pygmies".

TIL that we have to "thank" the RAF for our license plate font. Fascinating.

Two #chess players in the beautifully illustrated #manuscript MS. Bodl. 264. (fol. 145v). Their game seems to be as interesting as the current #chessworldchampionchip.

This is one of my favorite illustrations in the Nuremberg Chronicle by Hartmann Schedel of 1493. It shows a small man fighting storks. They belong to the monstrous humanoids that are said to inhabit the farthest corners of the world.
