The mythological Queen Lamia also has a son who is transformed into a shark, and the name Lamia is also associated with the sea monster goddess Keto. While some scholars have tried to tie Lamia to snakelike monsters it's pretty flimsy imo and such monsters are called by other names (4/4)

Ancient naturalists use the word to describe a dangerous shark. Aristotle refers to a man-eating shark called "Lamia" for example. The change from shark to a bunch of other animal traits in medieval times probably comes from mistranslation. (3/4)

Meanwhile, the association of the word "lamia" with sharks in the ancient world is much better attested. The word "lamna", meaning a shark or predatory fish, is derived from "lamia" which probably also referred to large, dangerous sharks. (2/4)

The association of the word "lamia" with snake women can only be uncontroversially traced back to the poem "Lamia" by Keats. There have been some arguments that Lamia was intended to be a snake monster in 1st century sources but these are ambiguous at best. (1/4)
