Bad cyclist, average doctor, really really good at crosswords. Not a sergeant. Anaesthetics/ICM/Sustainability. All views strictly my own.
Shit Tom, thatβs awful. Absolute arseholes, really hope you are ok and police find them
08.10.2025 09:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Agree thatβs a fair counter argument. Devil in the detail as always. Weβll have to wait see what actually gets proposed.
02.10.2025 18:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0All Iβm doing is pointing out that a small fee may not be so outrageous in most cases. System would speed up. Outrage seems to greet every attempt by labour to balance the books atm. Sometimes justified, but not here imho. (6 months to find it once workers rights bill passes π€)
02.10.2025 12:24 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Of course I understand. Means testing has previously been used, reasonable to assume it might be again. Not every employment tribunal case is David vs. Goliath you know. Waiting years to have your case heard (cos there no money) is bloody awful as well. Always a balance to be struck.
02.10.2025 12:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It all depends on the proposed fee. Fees were pretty high when coalition brought them in which WAS a big problem (see my other post for deets). No idea what $$ labour are proposing, itβs all speculation until then. Backlog of 45k cases due to lack of funds is not great for justice either.
01.10.2025 19:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0(Although I donβt necessarily think it is a stupid idea. Depends on the level of the fee!)
01.10.2025 17:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This I agree with. Stop deciding on policy based on how it lands when you waft the idea in front of the press!
01.10.2025 17:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Ps there are plentiful judges! Just not enough funding for cases.
01.10.2025 17:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Current backlog due in no small part to the fallout from this. Β£55 was only ever a suggestion last year by Sunak. Not sure it amounts to βpricing people out of justice. β All speculative anyway as no figure yet mentioned by labour.
01.10.2025 17:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Slightly muddled journalism. Fees from 2013-2017 were between Β£400 and Β£1.2k to have case heard, plus other fees in some cases. Exemptions for those on low incomes, possibility of reimbursement if case successful. Still not surprising that cases fell through floor.
01.10.2025 17:07 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Never thought Iβd see the day.
In science we trust.
How many Drs who qualified the same time as me ever thought theyβd see this in their lifetime?
Isnβt science (and arenβt experts) great?
Not just you! I get so invested in things, especially long book series, itβs such a low when you finish. Seriously dragging out the last HTTYD book with the big one atmβ¦really gonna miss that Hiccup kid π«£

15.09.2025 21:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0His statement is also horrible.
-I was texting women so thatβs alright then, no misogyny here.
-It was all just a βsilly conversationβ
-I find it βchillingβ that I have been made to take responsibility for my own actions.
I donβt think he gets itβ¦.and neither do his βfuriousβ buddies
Are we supposed to overlook sexual harassment, racism and misogyny now, because this guy supposedly has βthe best brain in governmentβ (heaven help us!).
This was only 2017 fgs, he canβt play the 90s card.
The saving per year is ~1000 tonnes of CO2e.
This is around 10% of the carbon footprint of the Trust.
People can consider for themselves whether that is too much to spend to enable this treatment, which is highly valued by very many midwives and women. 2/2
A real world example: the capital cost to install nitrous cracking in my local maternity unit (~6000 deliveries pa, quite a big unit by UK standards) is 300k. Ongoing maintenance costs roughly equivalent to existing scavenging system (which pumps the entonox out of the hospital chimneys) 1/2
12.09.2025 17:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0We do not consent patients using entonox for bone marrow biopsies, endoscopies, burns dressings etc. etc. for the risk of global warming.
Maternity care should not be the exception.
Epidural or remi PCAS for all is neither desirable nor realistic.
We do not routinely highlight the ruinous environmental cost of healthcare βchoicesβ to other patient groups. It does not form part of the consent for robotic surgery, for example, or admission to intensive care.
12.09.2025 17:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Why shouldnβt women be able to access entonox in labour, if all it takes is βsubstantial capital, infrastructure, energy and ongoing maintenanceβ to mitigate environmental harm? Show me modern European healthcare that does not require these things?
12.09.2025 17:08 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0ICU sedation, or βanaesthesia-liteβ, is definitely harmful. Itβs acceptable only insofar as itβs unavoidable and/or the least bad option. Not comparable with what we can and should achieve in theatres.
08.09.2025 21:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Weirdly seems to only affect tickets from Ben Rhydding on the Ilkey-Bradford line. Train tickets should not be this complicated! On the bright side, at least I know now! π
#ilkley #northernrail #benrhydding
Bah! I often commute from Ben Rhydding to Frizinghall. Did not think advance tickets were available on the line (never an option). Turns out buying the ticket either onto Bradford Forster Square, or alternatively, from Ilkley station, gives advance fares saving > 50%. Bloody Northern Rail!
06.09.2025 17:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0All 12 patients obeyed commands when they were supposed to be anaesthetised. Conflating following motor commands with consciousness is pretty standard. But maybeβ¦.this assumption is misleading? Sleepers will often obey simple commands, particularly in REM cycles. Are they conscious?
06.09.2025 14:17 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Consider humans without the capacity for explicit (important distinction) memory eg. young children, dementia patients. Implicit memory can still result in profound psychological distress without recall. Therefore, for me, it becomes very easy to say that it is not acceptable to be aware under GA.
