Whilst we have had a great field season and have deployed 11 tags in two days on elephant seals 🦭, we can’t ignore the unthinkable amount of plastic in this, one of the most isolated areas of the world.

Finally attended my first marine mammal post-mortem yesterday evening with the team at Cornwall Marine Pathology!🥼

It was fascinating to assist in examining these two adult common 🐬s. Incredible how much valuable data can be collected from these for so much further research🧑‍🔬🔬

Using DNA to identify seabird bycatch – Australian Antarctic Program (News 2024) Scientists have used DNA technology to help identify threatened albatross, petrel and shearwater species caught as bycatch by fishing vessels.

Our new paper outlines methods to ID albatross and petrel species using DNA from feathers. This provides tools to determine which #seabirds species are threatened by fisheries bycatch
