Zakaria points out that months ago the United States was by far the dominant economy in the world, with the strongest network of allies. Trump starting trade wars against friend and foe alike ends it. The result will be a United States that is less prosperous, less dominant and more isolated.

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated.

The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west).

In most parliamentary systems governments fall because entire parties walk out en masse. Individual MPs breaking with their party leader aren’t the typical way things go down. Except maybe in the UK but the UK is a eccentric in many ways

I meant about surviving a move against the party leader being a necessary condition for parliamentary checks on the executive.

I think it’s time to start seriously considering that Trump’s goal may be to weaken the United States. I can’t think of a single foreign policy initiative that Trump has undertaken in his first term or now that has strengthened our geopolitical position. I can think of many that have weakened us.

If you worked for 18F and got fired, Group together to start a consulting company.

It’s just a matter of time before DOGE needs you to fix the mess they inevitably create.

They will have to hire your company as a contractor to fix it. But on your terms.

I’m happy to invest and/or help

Yep. Water wasters. Urban users use about a quarter of the water from the Colorado river and farms use 75%. Nuts in CA and cotton in AZ. Both wasting water in the desert

Not the main story, but Trump has chosen a recently retired three-star General, John Caine, to replace Brown. Going back a very long time, Chiefs of Staff have had four stars -the highest rank- and related command experience before they became C.O.S.

In the absence of a city level procedure for the city to defend itself against this usurpation of New Yorkers’ intentions, doesn’t the governor have a justification to act?

This is sort of the skeleton key to understanding a lot of shit: there 100% is a non-trivial amount of inefficiency and waste in the federal bureaucracy, and most of it is a *direct result* of β€˜reforms’ that are meant to assuage the people who complain about β€œwaste and inefficiency in govt”

Top Trump administration officials are openly questioning the judiciary’s authority to serve as a check on executive power as the new president’s sweeping agenda faces growing pushback from the courts.

Trump's immediate agenda is to destroy institutions (designed to overcome collective action problems surrounding our security and health). We will be less secure, weaker, and sicker for it.
