The book recently received the 2026 Book of the Year Award (Senior Scholar Category) from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education. The event kicked off with remarks from Prof. Mario Barnes, Director of CLEAR, who also moderated the conversation, & concluded with a book signing.

It serves as the official home to the collaborative activities of the UC Irvine community of scholars working and researching at the intersection of law and philosophy and related fields in the humanities.

The interdisciplinary UC Irvine Center for Legal Philosophy launched in 2017 as a partnership initiative of the Law School and School of Humanities.

“Through the stories of individuals and families from the early 1900s to present day, this brief shows the unjust impact on marginalized communities when the government strips citizenship,” said Prof. Susan McMahon.

"The Fourteenth Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship regardless of race or parents' immigration status,” said Prof. Robert Chang. “We urge the Supreme Court to affirm that constitutional rights cannot be stripped away by executive order.”

The brief — joined by AALDEF and 70+ organizations nationwide — draws on historical parallels, from the post-Thind denaturalization campaign to the Expatriation Act of 1907, to warn against creating a "permanent underclass" of U.S.-born individuals denied full citizenship rights.

Little-used ICE agreements with local police have exploded under Trump Partnerships between ICE and local law enforcement agencies have expanded widely under the second Trump administration, data analyzed by NPR shows.

Professor Annie Lai was quoted in NPR about the expansion of ICE’s 287(g) program, which authorizes certain local police to carry out immigration enforcement functions, noting that “the potential for civil rights violations is acute."

A packed room gathered at UC Irvine Law on Tuesday for a panel discussion commemorating Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.

The plaintiffs and legal teams in the case were recognized by Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis for defending constitutional and human rights and challenging immigration raids that began in June 2025 in LA County.

The UC Irvine Law Immigrant and Racial Justice Solidarity Clinic, directed by Prof. Annie Lai, received the Human Rights Award from the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations for its work in Vasquez Perdomo v. Noem.
