Digital flyer for a virtual event titled โCalling Swing Districts โ Save Scientific Research Funding.โ The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 17th at 3:00 PM PT and will be held online. The flyer invites people to help call South Asian voters in Republican-held swing districts to encourage them to contact their representatives about proposed cuts to scientific research funding. It states that the Trump administration plans to cut 38% from the NIH and 55% from the NSF and has already withheld $3.8 billion in NIH funding. The event will also include calls to moderate Republican Senators to oppose cuts to NPR and PBS. At the bottom is a QR code and the logo for Stand Up for Science, along with a note that the RSVP link is available at Standupforscience.net. The background includes a red-toned image of the Statue of Liberty.

As a scientist who studied animal behavior, this is extremely alarming. There is no way to test behavior/cognition in an organoid. If you could, that organoid would be conscious & deserving of protections as well.
Either neuroscience should be forbidden forever or these sacrifices are necessary.

While advances in non-animal model technologies offer complementary tools, they lack the full physiological and developmental context of a living organism.

I assume that this pertains only to applications that focus on therapeutic development and not those addressing fundamental biology or mechanism.
But I am wary about making assumptions...

Vice President Harris and Douglas Emhoff watch fireworks at the White House on July 4, 2024.
This Fourth of July, I am taking a moment to reflect. Things are hard right now. They are probably going to get worse before they get better.
But I love our country โ and when you love something, you fight for it. Together, we will continue to fight for the ideals of our nation.
When federal funding for medical research is cut, itโs not just budgets that suffer โ people do. As the @aamctoday.bsky.socialโs chief scientific officer Elena Fuentes-Afflick, MD, MPH points out, many dedicated researchers are losing their jobs. More in @thehill.com: thehill.com/homenews/edu...

Stopping a clinical trial or research project then trying to start it up years later is like stopping the construction of an aircraft carrier and trying to start it up years later.
That fails. There are only so many experts, and so many places to do the work, and they schedule years out.
NIH-funded Medical Scientist Training Programs, like my program at Mayo Clinic, are crucial to recruiting, training, and retaining generations of physician scientists who innovate science and patient care ๐ข
