Snarky Snacks

Would you eat this? I'm snarky, love snacks and have no food filters whatsoever. If someone handed me a plate of spider eyes and said "try this", I'd be all over it. I travel the world (79 countries so far) and review the weirdest snacks that I can find.

This Japanese cheese snack was surprisingly good. At first bite, I stopped chewing and thought "Wait, is this supposed to be crunchy?" 😲Turns out, it is. Iburigakko is a smoked pickled daikon radish. The combo works really well #japan #snack #cheese #iburigakko #streetfood #travel #food #budget

Who would have guessed that sugarcane juice could be healthy? Turns out it is a superfood packed with minerals, vitamins & antioxidants and aids digestion, liver function, and immunity. Just don't drink it by the gallon. BogotΓ‘, Colombia #sugarcane #juice #superfood #snack #colombia #streetfood

Does it feel a bit weirdly ironic eating tongue with your tongue? Yes. But was this snack off-the-charts amazing? Also, an emphatic yes. Like salami, but ramped up several notches on the deliciousness scale #japan #kyoto #familymart #salami #tongue #cheapeats #foodsky #snack #beef #travel

Potato chip (potetochippusu in Japanese, because of course it is). Flavors: Creamy Spicy Pollock Roe, Tangy Pickled Plum Blossom, Nori, and Milk Tea. Well, it's no Lay's Sour Cream & Onion but sure, I'll give it a go #japan #potatochip #snacks #japanese #food #travel #budget #foodsky #potetochippusu

In the US, I wouldn't go into a 7-11 on a bet, but in Japan I'm all over it, on a quest to find new, deeply troubling snacks. I found ready-to-eat chicken hearts, as one does, and amazingly, they weren't displayed near the vape pens. They were also quite tasty #seveneleven #japan #snacks #foodsky

Making mochi at Nikishi Market, Kyoto, Japan. I'm not much of a sweet tooth but the sweets in Japan are not as cloying as in the US since they use much less sugar #mochi #nikishi #market #japan #kyoto #japanese #sweets #dessert #budgettravel #cheapeats #travel #foodsky #food

I visited Nikishi Market yesterday, what an amazing place! Heavy emphasis on seafood, everything cooked to order. Every stall smelled incredible; I wanted to try it all. Don't miss it if you visit Kyoto #nikishi #kyoto #japan #market #food #foodsky #travel #budget #seafood #delicious #cheapeats

If you're a KitKat fan, you'll be in heaven in Japan. Flavours include: Sake, Hoji-cha (toasted green tea), Purple Sweet Potato, Wasabi, Azuki Bean, Matcha, Cherry Blossom, Roasted Soy Powder, Cheesecake #kitkat #japan #japanese #food #chocolate #foodsky #candy #budgettravel #travel #candy #sake

If I see local people queuing for food, I join the line. I don't know what I'll be served, but it must be good. In Taito City, Tokyo, takoyaki (octopus balls) were at end of the line. Hot, delicious, oozy and crispy, topped with fish flakes & mayo #tokyo #streetfood #takoyaki #japan #travel #food

I love salty, crunchy snacks and will try anything that I haven't had before. In Japan, I sampled sunakku (snacks) like pickled plum potato chips, dried squid arms, soy quail eggs, and buttered scallops chips #japan #japanese #snacks #foodsky #food #travel #budgettravel #squid #sunakku #japanesefood

Cherry blossom season (Hanami) is fast approaching in Japan and cherry blossom (Sakura) flavoured items are everywhere. The season runs from March to May, depending on region, but the blossoms only last for two weeks or so #cherry #cherryblossom #japan #foodsky #food #sakura #hanami #travel #pink

Yep, I thought so too, so I gave it a go. It was much better than I thought it was going to be :-) Crunchy, with a creamy sauce, a bit like cole slaw but next level

Agreed! I love the Japanese commitment to perfection. I've visited (and eaten in) 70 countries and Japan is always at the top of my list

Tokyo Skytree Food Hall. I couldn't decide which flavour of gelato to order so I asked her what her favourite was and she said "Roasted Sweet Potato". Huh. So I tried it and it was scrumptious. Who knew? #tokyo #skytree #gelato #foodsky #japan #food #fjapanese #travel #budgettravel #travelfood

This week, I'm in Tokyo, Japan. I love the small plates here; I wander through the food halls and sample pork gyoza, squid salad, soups and anything else that looks tempting. Cheap and delicious! #japan #gyoza #foodsky #food #travel #budgettravel #cheapeats #japanese #tokyo

I love this philosophy. I keep a large Ziploc bag in my freezer to save veggie scraps and one for protein scraps and when they get full, I make a large batch of nutritious soup. My ex used to call it "Garbage Soup" but ate every drop of it

I grew up in Eastern Canada and this is a standard school field trip. We would start by learning to tap the trees and would then be walked all the way though the process until the delicious end, the tasting room. Not many people know that maple syrup is actually highly nutritious

Most countries offer inexpensive little nibbles to go with your glass of wine. In Venice, Italy, they're called Cicchetti and are served in bars called bΓ cari. Crostini is topped with whipped cod, sardines, marinated veggies or meatballs #foodsky #cicchetti #wine #italy #venice #budgettravel #travel

Visiting wineries is a great way not only to sample local wines, but to try unusual nibbles. Although U.S. winery tasting rooms can be pricey, they are surprisingly affordable abroad. At the Valdemar Estates Winery, Walla Walla, WA #valdemar #winery #nibbles #food #travel #wine #budget #travelfood

I discovered that there is a manga series about a food critic who is tasked to create the perfect Japanese menu. The series explores Japanese cuisine and culture through in-depth stories about specific dishes, ingredients, and culinary techniques #japan #oishinbo #travel #food #manga #japanese
