Koromiko, Veronica (salicifolia…..I think!?) Also once known as a Hebe but reclassified as a Veronica in recent years. This bush is found in gardens around the country. I realise none of my pieces have flowers, but Spring arrives in a couple of days so hopefully the blooms aren’t too far away!

Sorry, it’s a tree (not a shrub)!

Watercolour painting of Tarata stem and leaves, on wooden table next to the plant specimen and art supplies.
Small watercolour painting of Tarata stem, with small description written in pencil with the words “Tarata, Pittosporum eugenoides, Lemonwood, 27/08/25”
Tarata, Pittosporum eugenoides, Lemonwood. This is a small cutting from a plant my brother gave me. A hardy shrub that gives off a beautiful citrus scent when the leaves are crushed. Tarata is susceptible to little red spots - a fungi? - not harmful in small quantities, just adds character!

I came across this little shrub while out walking near Pigeon Flat, just north of Dunedin. There are many types of mingimingi (also called mikimiki), and they make fantastic shelters for insects and lizards. This particular one is commonly known as Coprosma areolata—or thin‑leaved coprosma.
