This is the first time Iβve seen a starfish larva in samples from Cromer Pier, so Iβm super excited. This is probably Asterias rubens and this is a bipinnaria stage larva. Iβve photostacked the images, itβs not perfect, but it allows us to see all the bits of this very 3D larva. #plankton π¦

Sexual reproduction is a poorly studied phenomenon in protists. There are several primitive forms of sexual reproduction, making it difficult to determine when they reproduce sexually and when asexually. Testate amoebae are a good example of such a case.

It was a very productive week in lab!
We now have Naegleria fowleri (brain-eating amoeba) cultures growing, in addition to the Naegleria gruberi (harmless relative) cultures we have been using as a model. Put side-by-side, it is impossible to tell them apart.
