⏰REMINDER: If you disagree with your assessed value, Monday, September 15 is the last day of the Assessment Appeals Board (AAB) filing period to submit your formal appeal for your 2025-2026 assessment.

Today's disgusting killing of Charlie Kirk is yet another example of the gun and political violence epidemics that plague the United States. Violence is a threat to everyone, no matter your beliefs or ideology. We must all collectively condemn this tragedy.

But if there’s one thing I know, it’s that the path ahead of us is lit up by his ethos, strategy and remarkable vision. I’ll miss my friend and mentor, with his unmistakeable humor and candor—and will always be thankful for all that he gave us. May he rest in power.

Losing someone like John at a time when we’re faced with some of the greatest existential threats we’ve seen in our lifetime and unanswered questions about how we move forward is a big loss.

He stayed true to that same vision for his entire career. There was never a question of what he stood for. He lived a full and generous life, showing us what is possible when we think bigger and that our collective victories come from our strongest moral choices.

From the beginning, John Burton had a vision for California and our country, centered on uplifting those most vulnerable. He was keenly aware of those who would be hit hardest by government’s failures and knew the value of its success to serve those most in need.

With gratitude and reverence for the sacrifices and courageousness of our workers, I’m reminded of what’s possible when we unite together towards common goals.

More often than not I look to the picture of César Chávez hanging in my office. It is a source of light during moments of darkness. Defending rights and changing power structures has never been easy. Yet, Labor has never shied away from this work.

We see it today in SF with local labor leaders who stand at the forefront of the resistance to the despicable acts of hatred and violence being committed, demanding basic decency. We see it in our history, both recent and past, in the fights for economic, social and environmental justice.

The Labor Movement is continued proof that when we work to uplift the rights and livelihoods of the workers that sustain us, shelter us, move us, teach us and keep us safe, we make this country a better place for all.
