There are patterns of pain and anguish and despair in history but my gosh there’s community and hope and organizing in it too. It’s part of what keeps me going these days.

Also very thankful that the weather is cool enough that I can have a cup of tea when I cook.

First go round with my new pots and I’m praying I didn’t ruin my sautΓ© pan with a rookie mistake.

Years ago when I was on SNAP (we called it Link) I would tutor my hairdresser's son in exchange for getting my hair done. I got my teeth cleaned at a student clinic for $10 IIRC and my nails done by a friend in the cosmetology program who always needed people to practice on. Community 101

It's Invisible Disabilities Week 🫢🏽
Not all disabilities are visible and that doesn't make them any less real.
Chronic pain, mental health conditions, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases & more deserve awareness, respect, and understanding ✨

A photo of THE FLOWERS I DESERVE surrounded by red carnation blooms. A gothic book cover illustrated by Elaine Ho with typography by Cass at Opulent Designs. A regal Black woman gazes at the viewer. She is larger than life, towering head and shoulders above a dark castle. Her white horns are twined with flowering vines, and her red braids flow over the castle, hair transforming to a pool of blood at the foundation. She holds a white magnolia bloom. The title The Flowers I Deserve is set against the red in a sharp white serif font.

Hi #booksky

Gonna be vulnerable for a momentβ€”I'm losing a big chunk of income because things are rough for indie bookstores right now. I'll be depending on my royalties while I look for more work.

My new book is an atmospheric FFF+ gothic fantasy.

Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: β€œBlack Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.

What I learned from Miss Major was persistence and also keeping a sense of humor. I was lucky to see her work in various organizing meetings over the years. She was a model of how to be a good elder. Truly grateful for everything she did to make the world better. Time for the rest of us to continue.

Education Department wipes out special ed office in shutdown layoffs, union says The Education Department laid off nearly everyone at the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.

The end of federal enforcement of special ed laws. Some states - including MN - will likely be ok. But a lot of disabled kids in a lot of states are going to lose the education that federal law and decades of jurisprudence say they are owed.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

So not only is the world on fire every damn day but we bought a new dishwasher only to find out the previous owners did something illegal (AGAIN) in a previous repair and now an electrician and a plumber is involved and I’m crying bc we JUST got our emergency fund back.
