Did you know that, before becoming an artist, Vincent Van Gogh studied to become a pastor (among other things he tried in order to discover his passion)? For a while, he studied with a classical scholar named Maurits Benjamin da Costa, who lived in this house in the Jewish neighborhood.

Russell Shorto's history of Amsterdam helped set me on my path to telling the city's stories. I'm beyond grateful the John Adams institute asked me to perform at the launch of his new book!

Bet van Beeren, a legendary bar owner in Amsterdam. She was openly lesbian, and she was accepting of a very diverse clientele, which made her bar famous.

But today's story is about her childhood and the poor living conditions in the neighborhood that nowadays is one of the fanciest in the city.

Yesterday, the Holland Festival revealed their program for 2025, and we're thrilled that Badass Tours is a part of it!

Raden Adjeng Kartini was an Indonesian activist who advocated for women's rights and female education. At 24, she founded the first school for Javanese girls, which accepted girls of any class. Her birthday is now celebrated in Indonesia as Kartini day.
