I only skimmed the paper but the part about the half mean width left me wanting more. In effect, do you define "well-scaled LP" as "bounded mean width"? Or do you expect that there is a better definition of scaling such that the mean width property is also satisfied as a consequence?

We need a publication model with the fast turnaround of ML conferences but no attendance requirement and less reviewer lottery. I believe TMLR is part of the solution, and if you do too, come review with us!

I’m recruiting a postdoctoral researcher on a fully funded 2-year contract. The topic is developing and implementing new parallel graph algorithms, with applications to data-driven transportation and logistics.
Details and application procedure below ⬇️ Reach out if you have any questions!

I’m reasonably confident that this is the first Disney song cover about machine learning conferences.
At least the first one so far.
Don’t tempt me.

A nod to the organization committee, who gave their very best: Amanda Nicotina, Alexandre Prieur, Abhimanyu Aryan, Zacharie Ales, Mathieu Aucejo, Mathieu Besançon, Olivier Cots, Vincent Duval, Xavier Gandibleux, Joseph Gergaud, Julie Meyer, Pierre Navaro, Sandra Ulrich Ngueveu, Daniel Porumbel.

Screenshot of Figure 7 from "Route Planning in Transportation Networks" by Bast et al. (2016). It is a graph comparing various route-planning algorithms on the road network of Western Europe. The X axis is the preprocessing time of the graph, and the Y axis is the time taken by an individual path query after that. Both axes span several orders of magnitude along the Pareto frontier between fast queries and fast preprocessing.

Periodic appreciation post for this gem of a review by Hannah Bast and coauthors. If you think you know how to compute shortest paths... trust me, you don't. I can give you one spoiler though: preprocessing the graph helps A LOT.

The geometric interpretation I linked to on Wikipedia is quite nice, it relies on the hyperplane separation theorem which is immediately intuitive to anyone who has met a convex set.

But I don't think it beats the death metal song linked above
