I sat in my garden with a cup of tea and a book yesterday in SW18!

That and Egmont, Roman Carnival and Bartered Bride all on the first cassette of classical music I owned. Seared into my soul.

Of later discoveries, I would add Candide, Wasps and Academic Festival

I've really been into Hansen for a while, and agree about the 2nd - but I've got time for them all

I get it. I was driven mad by the overrepresentation of rabbits in advertising. Caramac. Duracell. Nesquik.

It's my wonderful son's birthday today, so here is the piece I wrote for him before he was born, when he was the size of a walnut. He is very much not that size any more - but he is bloody marvellous

If people like @itvpeston.bsky.social are unsure whether Sarah Pochin's statement was racist, they should try saying exactly the same thing to their employer and see how it goes.

For some reason, a huge chunk of the country want long standing problems, caused by decades of underfunding, to be fixed within months, and expect others to pay for them.

I have no solutions, and wouldn’t get involved in politics for anything, but this fantasy of a quick fix needs to change.

I know absolutely nothing about baseball, but as a devoted cricket fan the idea of a game that grinds on for hours on end with no prospect of either side winning is EXTREMELY APPEALING to me

Adverts should be representative of traditional British families

This feels like a significant moment...

I think that's probably right. There's just an awkwardness about the way he expresses his pleasure in music, even though it's clearly genuine and deep. It's frustrating

I found it interesting, but like when he talks about football and his genuine love doesn't come over, I felt the same here: he didn't really communicate that passion to me. Shame, as it's good to have a music-loving PM for once

Jane Austen's 250th birthday is coming up in December and I hope you'll celebrate by taking a turn about the room, acquiring a passion for dead leaves & closet shelves, and taking a fancy to the last person you could ever be prevailed upon to marry.
