Yes, please do! It's interesting. And a German native would probably be able to tell right away.

Though, as I think more, it is possible that your reading is implied, since who is the church but the people committed to it. And so there is a call for the church to be explicitly church. And dogmatics explicitly churchly. But I'd still say it's a reading more than a translation.

I agree that a critical translation is needed! Bromiley's infamous choice of "abolition" (for aufhebung!) of religion is one glaring example of what's missed in the English.

And maybe it is an idiom in this—that would make for an interesting reading of the preface! My German is just okay.

I don't know if that's an idiom, but it seems to me that the Protestant church is the subject of the sentence, not the people committed to it. The preceding sentence seems to confirm this as well, since it refers to a dogmatic undertaking of/by the Protestant Church. And the one after about leaders.

Tillich on Faith and Doubt
YouTube video by Stephen D. Morrison Tillich on Faith and Doubt

Are faith and doubt opposites? New video on Tillich’s concept of faith. I find it’s a practically helpful approach, especially for those who identify as “exvangelical” or who have “deconstructed” their faith.

"God does not exist" - Tillich's doctrine of God
YouTube video by Stephen D. Morrison "God does not exist" - Tillich's doctrine of God

New video on Paul Tillich's doctrine of God, particularly his claim that God "does not exist" and is "beyond essence and existence." I also consider his doctrine of omnipotence.

"Christ rejects the riches and pomp of this world. From this, we conclude that those who gather up riches for themselves in his name slander him greatly since they use him to cloak their own greed and wantonness." - Zwingli's 67 Articles, #23

Parts of his system were assigned for an intro to ST course at Luther Seminary. So I think Lutherans still read him. I also see his work discussed by people who identify as "exvangelical" or who say they've "deconstructed" their faith. The PT society is still active. Otherwise, I'd be curious, too!
