There's something deeply obscene and broken about the fact that Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are bombing elementary schools in an illegal war of aggression, and there's still a sense among the opposition that it has to be explained in terms of gas prices in order to get American voters to care.

To clarify, I’ve seen people say that the timing of this is meant to distract from the Epstein files. And yeah, maybe.
But similar to other things people have called distractions (ICE attacks, wrecking trans rights, etc) it still ruins lives.
And they also do it simply because they want to.

I think that’s worth remembering when people talk about this as a distraction from other events. Maybe the timing is was chosen based on that, but we should remember that these guys are also just violent racists. And Hegseth specifically has dreamt about a crusade for years.

My point is, Hegseth has clearly been frothing at the mouth to kill Muslims for years. He wants a holy war and he wants the people of Iran dead.
Now he has his opportunity.
It’s terrifying.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.
