❌ No young adult fiction or books for children of any age level. We publish for adult audiences.

Lanternfish Press readers love gothic fiction of every type. Cross-genre and dark historical fiction are both high up on our list as well.

We're very interested in intersectional memoir, but we're very selective in this category.

While Lanternfish Press does accept agented work year-round (agents—you can get in touch with @editorfish.bsky.social directly at any time!), we've only published a few books sold to us by agents.

❓ Do we actually acquire books from our open reading period?

We sure do! The vast majority of our authors come to us through the open submissions period. In 2025, half our books came from slush and half from previously published authors. (Our authors have been BUSY.)

And, since we always get asked...

❌ No, we don't want to see fiction between 40k-60k
❌ No, we don't accept anything under 20k or over 90k

For novels and novellas, we love to see the rare and strange, gothics of every region, and works that push the boundaries of genre.

Which is always a good thing! In the beginning the story sets up not just one but two potential sources of dramatic tension - one personal and one professional.
