This is the last week to see my show “Drawn To Light” at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA.

Happy Moth Face Friday! Here is the charming and colorful face of the Huckleberry Sphinx. Paonias astylus is one that doesn’t come around often.

Imperial Moths steal the show in July. Last night I had 9 of them at my lights. I like doing group shots to illustrate the size differences. The group contains Spiny Oakworm Moth -Anisota stigma, The Hebrew- Polygrammate hebraeicum, and Eacles imperialis.

National Moth Week got off to a great start
at The Quarry Gardens At Schuyler last night. Thanks to Rachel and Devin for hosting a wonderful event. Here are photos of the moth-ers rather than moths. Conditions were excellent for moths and we saw so many.

It’s Moth Face Friday! National Moth Week also starts. A festive time for moth lovers. This is Eacles imperialis- The Imperial Moth. A large and common moth during July.

It’s July when these magnificent moths make their first appearance. They are large and very common at my place. These two males were the first of the season for me. Imperial moths- Eacles imperialis showed up about midnight 7/10 in the piedmont region of Virginia.

Moth Face Friday is back with my painting of a Rosy Maple Moth. This evening is also the opening reception for my show “Drawn To Light” at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA. Be there from 5:30-7:30 to say hello. After dark I will have a UV light set up. You may even see these in person.

For Moth Face Friday I present a painting of The Giant Leopard Moth face. This painting with many other moth paintings is hanging at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. “Drawn To Light” will be there through 8/17. The opening reception is on 7/11.

The most unusual moth last night was Pink Prominent- Hyparpax aurora. I liked this group shot with a couple of very common Rosy Maple Moths- Dryocampa rubicunda. It’s fun to compare the pink and yellow moths. 6/27

The face of a male Polyphemus Moth for Moth Face Friday.

Moth Face Friday comes around again. This is the colorful face of The Neighbor- Haploa contigua. A moth I see every summer here in the piedmont region of Virginia.

I just completed this painting of Pearly Wood Nymph- Eudryas unio. A year ago was my first sighting of this lovely little moth. I saw two individuals. This painting will be in my July show at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA. It is 30X40 acrylic on canvas.

Moth face Friday is here again. There were several good choices this week. I kept coming back to this intriguing and mysterious looking face. Drab Prominent- Misogada unicolor.

A new painting of Huckleberry Sphinx Moth AKA Paonias astylus. I usually only see one of these each summer here in VA. This painting will be displayed in my show at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, VA in July. The painting is 30X40 acrylic on canvas.

As a defensive measure some Tiger Moths blow bubbles when annoyed. Here is Apantesis anna with a nice bubble. No doubt I was being annoying.

I like doing group shots for size comparison. Polyphemus, Anna Tiger, and Dot Lined White.

It’s Moth Face Friday. This moth I am only willing to call Haploa species. It doesn’t exactly conform to any familiar patterns. It also was very reluctant to cooperate with my photo efforts. It looks a bit like “contigua”, but is distinctly yellow.

It’s Moth Face Friday once again. This one is sporting a wild hairstyle. Pink Prominent AKA Hyparpax aurora was seen last week at my place. It has been too chilly for successful mothing lately. Here’s hoping for some warmer temps.

It’s wonderful to complete another moth painting. This is Funerary Dagger- Acronicta funeralis. I only see one or two of these each summer here in the piedmont region of Virginia. It is a distinctive little moth. The painting is 30X40 acrylic on canvas.

It’s Moth Face Friday again! This lovely face belongs to a female Automeris io. The females are darker in color than the males and vary from brown to mauve shades. I see far fewer females than males at my UV lights.

The mothing line up this morning 5/18 in the piedmont region of Virginia: Pink Prominent- Hyparpax aurora, Automeris io- female, Tuliptree Silk Moth- Callosamia angulifera- female, and The Angel- Olceclostera angelica.

A new painting done! This is Red Fringed Emerald- Nemoria bistriaria. A common moth here in the piedmont of Virginia. The painting is 30X40 acrylic on canvas.

Moth Face Friday! This handsome face belongs to a Luna boy. Actias luna.

I liked this photo of a Silver Spotted Fern Moth next to a Luna “tail”. Gorgeous moths in different sizes. Callopistria cordata and Actias luna. 5/11 in the piedmont of Virginia.

Another Moth Face Friday comes around. This week the featured moth is The Bad Wing. Is it bad? Not really. The wings have a distinctive elongated look because the hind wings are unusually small. Dyspteris arbortivaria.

The Beggar and Colorful Zale showed up on 5/5 in Virginia’s piedmont. Eubaphe mendica and Zale minerea.
