Farrer byelection: One Nation may well win Sussan Ley’s seat – that would be terrible for all of us Smart Liberals believe the coming Farrer byelection could be a two-horse race, with neither horse wearing Liberal or National colours. That would be bad enough. What would be worse, for everyone, is i...

Niki Savva on how Farrer is shaping up to be a two-horse race between One Nation and independent Michelle Milthorpe.

(In her view, this leaves the Liberals at a crossroads: should they put One Nation last as they once did, or become “One Nation Lite”?)

‘It’s a horrible feeling’: Loma Bropho has been unable to find a secure home for her six children for two years One in eight low-income Indigenous households have unmet housing needs, the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute has found

“There is no stock transfer and investment from the government,” she says, adding: “It’s also the extreme rental stress and the private market. Aboriginal people are not going to get a foot in and that’s a fact.

A cartoon drawing of a greyish-purple rabbit, similar to Bugs Bunny but not exactly the copywriter image. It has a whiffs face, crooked whiskers, buck teeth and bloodshot eyes with sleepy drooping eyelids.

Dr Monique Ryan launches campaign to
name killer heatwaves after climate polluters
Following another sweltering weekend in Melbourne and throughout southeastern Australia, the Independent
Federal Member for Kooyong, Dr Monique Ryan, has launched a new advocacy campaign to name killer heatwaves
after the companies responsible for fueling dangerous heat.
Quotes from Dr Monique Ryan, Independent Federal MP for Kooyong:
“Extreme weather events like Black Summer, Cyclone Yasi and the Lismore floods are seared into our memories.
But heatwaves, the climate hazard responsible for more Australian deaths than floods, storms and bushfires
combined, remain a silent killer.
“Extreme heat strains every system in the body. It stresses the heart, destabilises diabetes, worsens respiratory
conditions, and intensifies mental health crises. When temperatures rise, so do emergency department
presentations. Heat kills, and it’s time the Albanese government did something about it.”
Dr Ryan’s campaign also proposes naming extreme heat events after the companies responsible for producing
coal and gas that, when burned, drive hotter temperatures.
Dr Ryan: “Fossil fuels are the leading cause of climate change. They contribute to longer, hotter, and more
frequent heatwaves.
“When it comes to climate hazards, people act faster when they immediately grasp what’s at risk. Declaring a
Category 4 ‘Heatwave Santos’ or ‘Heatwave Woodside’ would be more salient than communicating a ‘temperature
spike’.
“We’ve seen this with tobacco: when the causal link was accepted, public policy changed and lives were saved. To
tackle our most deadly climate hazard—heat—we should start by calling it what it is, and by asking those who profit
from it to own their share of that harm.”
