The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is
finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East.
That's OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don't need them any longer -- But we will
remember. We don't need people that join Wars after we've already won!
President DONALD J. TRUMP
History lesson.
Our once great ally didn't come to our aid until 1917.

Snowy hills and blue skies, with footsteps showing on a snowy track
A woman hiker walking through snow up a hillside, blue skies overhead
Just when it felt like spring was actually underway, winter returned yesterday. Though with no wind it was T-shirt weather.
Stunning day in the Scottish Borders.

'Sensational' - David Nicholls
What a privilege to welcome the person who started it all, the reason this story exists, and the reason we get to bring it to life onstage. π§‘π Thank you, David!

Photo of a loch with some ducks on a sunny day. There are hills and a ruined building in the background. There are some little puffy clouds in the sky.
Those lucky French coming over to Edinburgh on such a glorious day! They're going to think it's always like this. Let's hope that's them used all their luck up for the weekend.

For the Student Who Said Grammar Doesnβt Matter When People Are Dying
What can kill is unclarity.
The misplaced modifier, for instance:
Having no hope, the wind didnβt move him.
Did the wind have no hope?
Clearly the writer meant,
Having no hope, he wasnβt moved by the wind.
But someone no doubt had told the writer
about the passive voice, to avoid it
at all costs, like passion,
and the writer, feeling with a chill
how costly life can be
when we are passive (the loverβs last knock
unanswered at the door),
opted for this construction.
Having no hope, the wind didnβt move him.
The difference
is between mystery and confusion,
between the windβs stillness and a soul
that wonβt be opened.
And why not? Why canβt
the wind hope?
I donβt know. I just know
it matters. Everything matters. What is erasing
what. Who is bombing whom.
It took me all day to misunderstand correctly:
Forgetting their children, the conquerors
destroyed them.
βJoseph Fasano
It matters.

But it can be a barrier for non-native speakers getting a job or continuing onto a college course or apprenticeship. The same N5/ B2 is needed for that. If there's no way forward, they can end up trapped on benefits, which I guess is part of the government's reasoning.

I don't think it's very helpful to call it A-level English. As I understand, it's B2 level, which is upper intermediate and about Nat 5 grade C in a modern language.

Trump belittles Starmer with 'no Churchill' jibe but can the special relationship recover?
The remarks came amid a row over the refusal to permit the use of UK bases for the initial US-Israel strikes.
A special relationship is built on mutual love and respect.
An abusive relationship is when your partner belittles you, gives nothing back, threatens you, keeps negatively comparing you to an ex partner and despite it all assumes you'll always be there for them.

So, in launching a huge bombing campaign on Iran they apparently didn't plan for:
- Who takes over;
- Interceptor shortages from sustained drone retaliation;
- How to defend US bases in the region;
- Threats to ships in the Strait of Hormuz; and
- How to evacuate Americans with airspace closed.
