Having skepticism regarding politicians is healthy, but being hopeless when the best candidate wins isn't doing you any favors. Absolutely call him out if/when his promises go unfulfilled, but acting like it's already happened is doomer AF.

You can definitely take the core concept but you'll want to work with your new DM to make sure it fits the setting for the new game. Unless it's something crazy you shouldn't have to do more than some tweaking to make it work though.
