I agree with Demont's endorsement of Houston's woods ban. I disagree that it was overreach to oppose Halifax Council's nutty (now rescinded) policy on bike lanes and Morris St.

As for strong mayoral powers, Halifax would be better governed by a council of 8 elected at large, not 16 ward-heelers.

Halifax council makes 'strategic retreat' on Morris Street bike lane project - Halifax Examiner Halifax will talk with Halifax Port Authority, emergency service providers to get more data about risks.

Despite all the caterwauling on Bluesky, Halifax Council voted 11-to-5 to rescind its foolhardy plan to make Morris Street one-way.

It's an apt illustration of the difference between actual public opinion and a self-selecting lobbying campaign.

Okay, now show us the number of cars in the same.

I never said there were no zealots who ride bikes in Halifax in snow. I just said the number is vanishingly small, and we both know I'm right.

In a debate about resources for cycling in Halifax, Nova Scotia?

06.08.2025 03:23 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You actually believe this?

Say, would you like to buy some shares in the bridges that cross Halifax Harbour?

06.08.2025 03:22 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

No, an accurate analogy would be if a neighborhood had 50 bikes and 2000 cars, and the city allocated 20 hectares for parking bikes and 1 hectare for parking cars.

Correction. I don't know what you're talking about. It's gibberish.

In Halifax we've seen the opposite. No one uses that absurd protected bike lane on South Park in the winter months. It's a waste of precious transportation infrastructure.

I, too, could create graphics and populate them with preposterous numbers, but I don't see the point. Your graphic demonstrates nothing, illustrates nothing, and proves nothing. It's ridiculous. The fact remains: Halifax lavishes resources upon cyclists far out of proportion to their numbers.

06.08.2025 03:08 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Because you are practicing an absurd niche pastime. By your logic, we should have separate lanes for people riding pogo sticks and hot air balloons. Bike use in Halifax in the winter months is rare, exclusively practiced by zealots.

In January or February, it would probably be 2000 to 1 or higher.

"A bike lane can move a lot more people than a road can move people in cars."

You don't really believe this do you? If so, I please take the challenge I keep repeating. Pick any road in the city with a bike lane; count the people in cars, & count the people on bikes,

100 to 1? 200 to 1?

This is how we should form public policy. Whichever group writes the most letters prevails.

So you think every street in Halifax should have a bike lane?

05.08.2025 20:04 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 1

No. You presented data in a nonsensical way that demonstrates nothing except the relative size of two vehicles. It adds nothing to the debate.

So you're saying the last Nova Scotia election was rigged? You might want to consult with the MAGA folks in Washington. They have broad experience pushing election conspiracy theories.

05.08.2025 19:05 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

You're right. It's called lobbying. Cyclists do it ferociously. But that says nothing about the rightness of their cause, nor does it confer them with moral authority.

05.08.2025 19:02 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

All of that is irrelevant. Take any street with bike lanes. Calculate the area occupied by the bike lanes and that occupied by motor vehicles. Now calculate the number of people on bikes per hour vs. those in cars. Much more of the roadway is set aside for bikes then their numbers warrant.

05.08.2025 18:59 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 8    πŸ“Œ 2

It's striking out angry members of the bike lobby get when they discover that not everyone agrees with them.

This is how every election in the history of Canada has been carried out. It's how the system works. Pretty basic political science. Perhaps you should consider taking a course.

I do live in Cape Breton. I previously owned a house on the peninsula and lived there for decades. I have driven on Morris Street many, many times.

So many essential services are located in Halifax that most rural Nova Scotians are familiar with streets in the city.

I would love to see some form of proportional representation in Nova Scotia, but at the moment, that's not the system we have. In the last election, Houston's party (which I personally didn't vote for) won 43 seats to 12 for all other parties combined. An unusually strong majority.
