Our first OI Public Lecture for 2026 was presented by Ambassador Peter Thomson, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean.

The OI share insights from the 6-month deployment of the M4 Wave Energy Converter in King George Sound in Albany.

Prof Gaudin and Dr Wolgamot presented key lessons on advancing wave energy in Australia, followed by a panel on community engagement and future opportunities.

ARC Laureate Fellow Thomas Wernberg explains to Ambassador Thomson and Marijcke Thomson how coastal underwater ecosystems such as kelp forests respond to climate pressures and contribute to carbon storage.

The OI team was pleased to host 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝘀𝗼𝗻 at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre at Watermans Bay, the region’s first seawater research facility, to showcase how Western Australian science is driving solutions with global impact.
