The causes of autism are in the news these days. In my 2006 book "The Missing Gene," I assessed the evidence that autism has a genetic basis. The evidence usually cited came from twin and DNA-based research. I concluded that the genetic evidence was weak. Chapters:

Good news. The key point is to differentiate true genetic diseases like Huntington's from major psychiatric conditions, which are not diseases and are not genetic. In psychiatry, there can be no gene therapy because there are no genes to therapize. Just "psychiatric yetis," using EF Torrey's term.

True, which suggests that the behavioral sciences should take a hard and objective second look at twin studies and their underlying assumptions (EEA). Not to mention the Minnesota "read-apart" twin study, where the researchers hid their control group data to find above-zero IQ heritability.

The main study cited by race scientists in favor of “high IQ heritability” is the 1990 “Minnesota Study of Twins Reared Apart” Science Magazine IQ article. In that study, the researchers hid their control group data to avoid a within-group 0% IQ heritability conclusion. Classic p-hacking maneuver.

Psychiatric Genetics founder Ernst Rüdin co-wrote the 1934 book promoting and explaining the 1933 Nazi forced sterilization law. Rüdin showed doctors how to perform the procedure. The law was based on eugenic junk science, and about 6,000 people died as a direct result of the procedure.

This massively and openly p-hacked schizophrenia adoption study was published 50 years ago, and is still cited in most psychiatry textbooks. If p-hacking and relying on faulty assumptions are "highly heritable traits," this would explain most psychiatric genetic research "findings."

Robert Plomin's 1998 adoption study of personality found no genetic influences (not quite what he concluded, as might be expected).

Kety's Danish schizophrenia adoption study and Bouchard's Minn. "reared apart" twin IQ study are world famous. In both studies, no genetic influences vs. the control group were found. The first study's author changed the control group. The author of the second study hid the control group data.

These were the scenes in Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.

The U.S. government sends troops to cities allegedly to "fight crime." One reason is the regime's belief that criminal behavior is "in the genes." In this 2001 article, I showed that there is no valid evidence supporting this old belief. There still isn't.

Interesting article. If the NY Times approached behavioral and psychiatric genetic research publications with the same level of scrutiny, as opposed to its usual practice of reporting them as examples of solid science, both fields might collapse.

Patrick Sullivan is a leading psychiatric genetic researcher. Yet his website states,

"...specific genes that have a causal role in [schizophrenia] have yet to be identified."

As Jews who know our history, we know what threats of forced relocation lead to.

Despite a replication sample, like other psychiatric diagnoses, most likely these are non-causal chance or spurious associations. In addition, BPD is a controversial and vaguely defined condition of questionable reliability and validity. Such research does not help improve the human condition.

The consent issue is real. But another issue is that 50 years of failed causal gene discovery attempts based on mistakenly accepting twin studies as gospel have shown, most likely, that there are no genetic influences on psychiatric disorders to be found in these blood samples.

Someone should ask the author why she and her colleagues failed to publish their 1990 @science.org control group IQ correlations.

I'm Jewish and I think about antisemitism all the time. I can't tell you how fucking weird it is that Homeland Security posting literal neo-Nazi propaganda generates less discussion about the threat to Jews than a mayoral candidate who believes Palestinians are human beings.

Agreed. Selecting embryos for IQ won’t work, and is based on highly flawed previous “IQ heritability” twin and adoption studies. But we do know that “Flynn Effect” environmental factors lead to “massive” IQ gains. Much better to focus on enhancing those factors.
