That always fascinated me how they would be able to spit their serial number out with confidence, remembering nothing else.

I would ask their permission if I could ask the vet some questions, & the family would assure me the vet doesn't remember anything but always said to ask. I would ask the veteran if he (usually) remembered his serial number from the military. Almost always, the veteran could pull the number out 2/3

I'm retired from the VA, and I dealt with veterans directly frequently. I would have family bring in veterans for care & they had no idea where their discharge papers would be. A lot of times, in these situations, they had no information because the vet had dementia & couldn't remember anything. 1/3
