Happy birthday to Charles Darwin,
patron saint of tired scientists, grumpy fieldworkers, and hating your own manuscript.

Cooperative mural, Gyula BajΓ³ on the side of the former Co-operative House (now Primark), the first major retail premises to open in Stevenage Town Centre in June 1958. It depicts the β€˜four cornerstones of a balanced economy – Industry, Commerce, Transport and Agriculture'.

Distant view of the Clifton Suspension Bridge from down river. The bright houses of Hotwells sit to the right of the bridge and everything is bathed in a warm, yellow light.

It was on p7 of the Times but that does nt say much actually as they had a fairly rigid layout then (p1&2 were adverts). it was the first foreign news page, had a number of different angles reported, with β€œthe political effects can only be surmised”, but tbf, not seen as portentous for Europe

We were always told in the Civil Service to report to the nearest local office if we couldn’t get up to London. I used to wonder what Tunbridge Wells job centre would do with 50 Whitehall policy wonks.

Let’s not descend to their level by circulating untruths. It is an unattractive slogan. But it is also mostly meaningless. Don’t dignify it with outrage, and falsehoods.
