Oh, and for the Protectors, I got really abstract, and sometimes went for intentional mistranslations. The first ARC I ever read as a bookseller was Drew Williams' "The Stars Now Unclaimed" and its sequel, "A Chain Across the Dawn". So was born Taut Syndicate of Unclaimed Stars.

One hack I shamelessly do for humans during writing is to use a lot of cultural names. Eliyas Omarov, Siobhan Doyle, and Iyapo Morgan are all written... like me (though with different emotional charges). But readers can imagine them differently as Greek, Irish, and Nigerian.

Hm, I can't really say how I come up with names for characters when I write. For some, a name just comes to mind. Sometimes I run my hand along a keyboard, then clean up the output. (This might be how I got Liz Bewick's last name, I forget.) For sufficiently alien aliens, I don't clean up as much.
