The Sunoco deal creates a potential choke point, and allows Warren to benefit personally from the continued energy trade.

As in Greenland, Venezuela and Ukraine, it's an example of US foreign policy interweaving with the interests of businesses and individuals close to the administration.

Concern over the deal reflects growing European alarm over energy dependency on the US, which now supplies over 40% of Europe's gas.

The White House has said gas exports allow the US to "project power" while cheering on far-right parties in the EU and threatening the bloc with tariffs.

Kelcy Warren is a major Trump donor and owner of Energy Transfer, which sued Greenpeace for $660m over the Dakota Access Pipeline protests.

Sunoco, a subsidiary of Energy Transfer, recently bought TanQuid, Germany’s largest independent fossil gas storage company for €500 million.
