I finished reading Haru Book 1 with my son tonight. He was really into it. I picked it up for the art, knowing it was an adventure story. The visuals grabbed him too. I had to explain a lot of the details on each page, but it was fun doing different voices for the characters.

Going in, I expected Starship Troopers the movie—but different. I’d forgotten the novel reads more like a philosophical lecture than an action story. I’ve got nothing but good things to say. I’m just annoyed I waited so long to revisit it—now the Folio Society hardcover I wanted is gone.

Bitty Pops, blind-box toys, and those Pop Yourself kiosks aren’t going to save them. I never collected them, but it’s still kind of sad—they’ve been everywhere for so many years.

When I was a kid, I used to make fun of how ineffective it looked, but later I learned about the fragmentation armor soldiers wore in Vietnam, and the stormtrooper armor started to make sense. It offers some protection against all kinds of hits—you might get hurt, but not killed.
