just wanted to say i really enjoyed and appreciated this; thank you for verbalising the issue i have with so much queer sff these days !!!

There is a likeability crisis in much contemporary queer sff. Authors are unwilling to make their characters look bad, and it compromises the integrity of the story. I don’t think this is the result of individual authors’ incompetence. The state of the publishing industry and the social media ecosystem around genre fiction has refigured the reader as, primarily, a customer, and the customer is always right. If Yamamoto had written a highly entertaining and optimistic crime novel with a cast of highly flawed marginalized people who the reader is expected to root for even as they hurt each other, themselves, and the people around them—if they took seriously the premise of they story they did in fact write—it may have been more difficult to market. It may have received more negative Goodreads reviews from the kind of people who don’t like Wuthering Heights because it’s just a bunch of terrible people treating each other terribly. But oh my god. Who cares. Those people can go read a book that isn’t about people who steal things for a living and send each other to jail. Expecting authors to honour the gravity of their own concepts is not in conflict with appreciating fun, escapist genre fiction. Why are the “let people enjoy things [and don’t say anything negative about the things they enjoy]” crew the only ones who deserve to enjoy anything?

the comic starts with zagreus walking in from offscreen, implying he just died and is back to the house of hades. hypnos is there to greet him and says: "killed by 'redacted' again, huh? you look like you could use a little nap!'

in the next panel, zagreus responds: 'i'll sleep when i'm de-- ... oh, you know what, mate? you're right." in the next panel, zagreus is sleeping on hypnos's lap on the chaise he bought for him. hypnos is also napping, covering zag with his fluffy cape.

it's missing hypnos hours so have this lil comic i reformatted 😭

no, seriously :(( i also have been published etc (only short stories) and when i talk to agents or industry professionals they don't care i write controversial fic in the slightest; it's the feral people on twt and goodreads i worry about :'( very frustrating as i'd love to be more open

yesss totally! like i'll post WAY more on private (and the barrier for entry to my private accounts is often very low) but posting even mildly controversial fic makes me also want to be ultra-cautious about what i do and don't share. i don't even post photos of my cat just in case

BUT WITH THAT SAID there's no perfect solution, so moving SOMEWHERE has to be the first step (hence me trying to be more active on here)

i think also unfortunately here the lack of circle/private accounts makes it difficult to convince people to hop over... a lot of my closest friends are yapping on private and post almost nothing in public, so that's an extra layer

yess i think that's what i (someone who straddles both platforms) find the hardest... my mutuals are what make twitter fun for me so if people aren't replying/engaging w me i find that difficult, but also i know i need to move to make it worth it, so :-)

not sure how ninajirachi made a song about stumbling upon something you shouldn't have on the internet as a teenager so transcendent but i'm very grateful she did

5. Embassytown by China Mieville
first Mieville. really felt as though the first half was especially fantastic and meditative; a real treasure hunt of a book where i had to press the pieces of the puzzle together. fun thought experiments on truth as a vector for trust and vice-versa

4. Interview With the Vampire by Anne Rice
pretty slow, but the core tenet of trauma only causing more trauma rings undeniably true. as a vampire lover i really appreciate how the vampires are just as sexy as they are cursed. also pathetic wet cat Lestat gives me life
