His locker still stands. (Real ones know.)

Mark Anderson! Great call.

Cordarrelle Patterson might be in my personal top 5. Once asked him how he got better as a running back from one week (where he had something like 23 yards) to the next (where he had 75 or so). He thought a second before answering.

"Yards. Probably getting more yards."

That's still one of the greatest sports photos I've ever seen.

Only former Patriots' wide receiver to have a role in a zombie movie: www.imdb.com/title/tt1622...

Had to look it up to be sure. Per PFR, he was here from 03-05.

Great point. He was one and done and two games the next year.

Underrated. Good call.

Where does Diggs rank in the recent one-and-done guys in Foxborough? Better than Marty Bennett? How about Darrelle Revis? Is there another name or two in that same class?

Don’t necessarily think so. (But also wouldn’t be surprised.) In the end, though, when it comes to the NFL and situations like this, I tend to default to money.

Free agency (Pierce?), trade (Brown?), or the draft. Or maybe two of the three.

Would imagine there’s a contingency plan in place, yeah. As we saw last year with Milton Williams, the market can be fluid. But have to believe there’s a plan here. Just a matter of execution.

Maybe. Not necessarily disputing that idea. Just that I haven't heard anyone tell me that was part of the conversation.

IMO: The Patriots wanted Diggs back, but not at that cap number.

Both sides rolling the dice. Diggs is betting he can still merit a sizable payday on the free-agent market. And the Patriots need to figure out a way to replace his production (Alec Pierce? A.J. Brown? A mystery third WR?)

Diggs on Instagram. Looks like he will be released at the start of the new league year next week.

Agreed. I know Big Mike has probably put on a few unwanted lbs, but he remains technically sound.

I'll also say this: I pride myself in studying OL play really closely, and I still consider it the toughest position to really wrap my head around. So many variables and nuances to consider.

Getting some good replies to my OL analysis, all of which are completely fair. My reasoning for saying there was improvement was based largely on how far they came and the expectation I had for the group prior to the start of camp. From my positional preview in July:

Like the argument. Mine is based on the expectations I had for the group because it was so bad last year. Here was my position preview at the start of camp.

After making a huge jump in 2025, can the Patriots’ offensive line take another step forward in 2026? - The Boston Globe Whether it was coaching, personnel acquisitions, lineup combinations, or a combination, the Patriots pushed all the right buttons up front in 2025.

Now, the offensive line.

My argument was they went from one of the worst in the league to somewhere near the middle of the pack. Instead of “jump to average,” I’d instead say “level up and be consistent.” Fair?

With Hunter Henry and Austin Hooper, tight end has been a strength for the Patriots, but it may be time to get younger - The Boston Globe Henry and Hooper will turn 32 next season, which will be the 11th year in the league for both.

Today, it’s tight ends:

Was a podium over when he was talking with reporters. Lot of respect for this young man. It isn’t easy in that spotlight for anyone, but he handled it with grace. Easy guy to root for.

The Patriots had an effective running back duo in Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson, but they could use depth - The Boston Globe The Patriots ranked sixth in rushing yards per game last season (128.9) in large part thanks to the efforts of Stevenson and Henderson.

The Patriots’ future revolves around Drake Maye, who could use another offseason of offensive investment - The Boston Globe Despite playoff struggles, Maye provided plenty of reason for Patriots optimism moving forward.

Starting our Patriots’ positional analysis with a look at QB:

The final chapter didn’t provide the ending Patriots’ fans were hoping for, but the story of Drake Maye’s ascent throughout 2025 is the kind of thing that should maintain optimism about the direction of the franchise heading into 2026.
