I just learned to pluck out Obstacles by Syd Matters (I think from the end of ep 1) on guitar recently, a timeless soundtrack. They really capture such a specific vibe, especially in the first two games

Games like The Sinking City or the multitude of Cthulu games present cosmic horror naked and in 4k. The tentacles are not the point. Feeling small is the point, and by withholding detail, by obscuring their horror, Signalis and Bloodborne make it believable that it dwarfs us

Obviously the other big example of successful video game cosmic horror is Bloodborne - it hides cosmic horror behind larger than life gothic architecture, and the howling of beasts, in the blood and in the womb.

More than that though, the cosmic horror of Signalis obscures that it's actually a poignant and personal story of love and loss - much like Chambers' King in Yellow, to which the game refers over and over.

Signalis' art style allows for mysteries to hide in the shadows, it is blocky and crackles with static. Our brains can believe that cosmic malice can live in the space between it's pixels. Cosmic horrors thrives when it is obscured

Signalis is on my mind this Halloween as I think about cosmic horror, and the difficulty of translating it to console. I think ultimately, cosmic horror need to obscure and be obscured.
