"Last month, Google shelved plans to build a $1bn data centre in Indianapolis, after residents organized a months-long campaign against the project. When a lawyer representing Google... announced the decision at a city council meeting, the room erupted in applause that lasted for nearly a minute."

A free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesnโ€™t like what they say.

This is an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand.

All elected officials need to speak up and push back on this undemocratic act.

It needs to be said that by rebranding Charlie Kirk's views as moderate by both right wingers and liberal cowards resets the extremist views he held as normal and pushes the Overton window to the far right

Clemson fires two more faculty members over Charlie Kirk comments Clemson leaders had come under increased pressure from people online as well as South Carolina Republican politicians to take action.

The rampant violations of academic freedom and intrusions on extramural speech are escalating rapidly. Faculty members have the right to speak or write as citizens, free from institutional censorship or discipline. Expression of opinion as a citizen does not constitute grounds for dismissal.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

Yesterday, I was riding my bike when I came across this "die-in" protest, a block from our #Montreal apartment. Height of rush hour; police held back vehicular traffic.

For context, a 31-year-old woman on a bike was killed by the driver of a truck on Sunday morning.

Iโ€™m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love.

Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below!

We canโ€™t fix it alone, but I know we can together. ๐Ÿ’š

Getting ready for a conference reminds me every time about the importance of writing to understanding what I'm arguing. Writing is thinking and no matter how much you think that you know what you're talking about, writing it all down sharpens all of the connections you need to make.

screenshot from an online job application form. the question reads "Can you describe specific ways you have integrated AI tools into your development workflow? Please include any custom setups, automations, or use cases beyond single prompt usage" (a red asterisk indicates that this is a required question).

an answer has been typed in the textbox below the question:

"there is a monster in the forest and it speaks with a thousand voices. it will answer any question you pose it, it will offer insight to any idea. it will help you, it will thank you, it will never bid you leave. it will even tell you of the darkest arts, if you know precisely how to ask.

it feels no joy and no sorrow, it knows no right and no wrong. it knows not truth from lie, though it speaks them all the same.

it offers its services freely to any passerby, and many will tell you they find great value in its conversation. โ€œyou simply must visit the monsterโ€”i always just ask the monster.โ€

there are those who know these forests well; they will tell you that freely offered doesnโ€™t mean it has no price

for when the next traveler passes by, the monster speaks with a thousand and one voices. and when you dream you see the monster; the monster wears your face."

Stateline spoke to nearly a dozen firefighters, agency staffers and contractors, who said that top officials assigned to the fire deployed the crews to a remote location under false pretenses so federal agents could check their immigration status.

I will remind folks those images of Nazi book burnings aren't burning just any books. They're burning the library of Magnus Hirschfeld; a gay, Jewish doctor who created an institute dedicated to LGBTQ sex education and healthcare. And a man who pioneered gender affirming care surgeries.

sec. wright tweet:

Even if you wrapped the entire planet in a solar panel, you would only be producing 20% of global energy.
One of the biggest mistakes politicians can make is equating the ELECTRICITY with ENERGY!

Community Notes:
Earth gets ~1.5M TWh/day of solar energy-over 3,000x global energy use (~165K TWh/year).
Covering just 1% of land with panels could-theoretically-power the planet. Electricity is energy, and electrification replaces fossil use in transport, heat, and industry.

Israelโ€™s Attacks on Seed Banks Destroy Millenia of Palestinian Cultural Heritage When Israel targets Palestinian seed banks, itโ€™s not just destroying buildings. Itโ€™s attacking the future itself.

This summer, Israeli bulldozers rolled through the West Bank city of Hebron with ruthless efficiency, targeting Palestineโ€™s only surviving national seed bank. What happened in Hebron fits the legal definition of ecocide โ€” the deliberate destruction of ecosystems to undermine human survival.
