I feel like David Graeber really captured something about lefty academia because the concept of “bullshit job” is very resonant and has a lot of intuitive appeal but his exploration of it is totally hamstrung by the fact that he’s never left campus and is very vague on the mechanics of actual work

Platner has 2 basic constituencies, these guys and ppl so desperate they are willing to choose words over actions. But these are the ones I'm talking about

Platner is the shining symbol to the matty y and jon favreaus of the world that their world will stay the same and they won't suddenly need to actually be competent at things to survive. They need Platner to win. He represents them

This is uncharitable but consistent with a major consideration that preoccupies me: that investment in Platner is really about investment in the 'aspirationally normal masculine man' aesthetic he exudes as a substitute for substantive politics or policy.

you need to understand that Platner is not just a candidate , he is a canary in the coalmine to a certain kind of man that the world has not changed and they still can get plush gigs and pole position in society and life with zero qualification and even less aptitude for the work .
