This is really cool!!

In this paper www.nature.com/articles/s41..., we found anhedonia measures were assoc with an in-lab, induced "sunburn", even when controlling for 'skin type spectrum score', sex, age, & minority status. Cutaneous erythema (like sunburn) is also linked to NLRP3 inflammasome!

I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. The fact that junior people have to ghost write grants speaks to how messed up the system is. I really hope the senior people do the right thing here.

anyone got any advice on the following situation? I wrote and did a big chunk of the admin for a large MRC grant which also also awarded. I am named in the Staff breakdown on the grant as "researcher co-lead" with 100%FTE, and I am mentioned by name as "postdoctoral researcher Maria Niedernhuber"

Psoriasis-related neuroinflammation disrupts thalamostriatal signalling driving anhedonia in both humans and mice Inflammation is implicated in 25% of depression cases, yet limited access to human brain for mechanistic studies and scarce translational models have hindered the identification of neural circuits lin...

Final #neuroskyence preprint of the year! We updated our big neuroinflammation project, studying psoriasis-like inflammation in both humans and mice. Main take-home: we see impaired thalamostriatal signalling in humans and mice alongside depression / anhedonia.

The U.S. Is Funding Fewer Grants in Every Area of Science and Medicine A quiet policy change means the government is making fewer bets on long-term science.

Under Trump, the NIH is giving fewer grants to fewer scientists. The grants awarded are smaller and scientists have less time to spend them.

Projects in cancer, diabetes, aging, neurological disorder, and more are going unfunded.

Things that will get you kicked out of academia forever:
- taking maternity leave at the wrong time
- spending too much time with your kids
- reporting harassment
- not moving every 2-3 years
- taking a partner's job/preferences into account
- mouthing off before tenure

Any computational RL people have thoughts (or even better a link to a paper) about effect sizes in the context of RL parameters like learning rate?

I vaguely remember talking to someone about effect sizes possibly not being very meaningful…but a paper on the topic would be awesome!!

Suzanne Perkins, University of Michigan Research Center for Group Dynamics: β€œThe promise of neuroscience is that you could target interventions that could really support what you feel is going wrong.
