Questions about the
Rental Ripoff Hearings?
We have answers.

What's the difference between 311 and Rental Ripoff Hearings?
For immediate habitability or health and safety issues, call 311. You can also request the Tenant Support Unit.
The Rental Ripoff Hearings are focused on bigger-picture reforms – like shaping how the City tracks and responds to all 311 calls. Hearings will also have an on-site resource fair where agencies can help with individual issues.
Can I sign up if I live in a NYCHA building?
Everyone is welcome to attend and share their experiences.
NYCHA senior staff will be on site to answer questions and help public housing residents file service requests. The topic of these hearings, & the subsequent report with recommendations, focuses on issues under HPD, DOB, and DCWP’s jurisdictions — agencies that oversee privately owned housing and the relationship between landlords and tenants as consumers.
In the coming months, our administration will release a housing plan to improve housing quality across the City — including public housing.

What kind of issues should I testify about?
Testify about challenges getting issues in your home addressed and any "junk fees" you've experienced as a tenant. Rental junk fees can include charges for amenities, pets, services, payment systems, and more.
How will the hearings help my situation?
Your story becomes data → Hundreds of stories reveal patterns → We compile an official report with policy recommendations → Those recommendations can drive new laws and stronger tenant protections.
That's how your testimony helps your situation —
and every renter’s across the city.

Last week, 3 people fell through the ice in Jamaica Bay. Thanks to the incredible work of the NYPD and FDNY, they were rescued and brought to safety. This winter weather has been tough, but our first responders are tougher.
