I love how AI's bubble is about to burst and Canada is like, "Let's pour all our money into AI and also make Evan Solomon in charge."

I know no real Zevon fan thinks Werewolves of London is his best song but it's such a testament to how good Scorsese is with music that he used it as the needledrop for the sequence in Color of Money where Tom Cruise basically became Tom Cruise

It just dawned on me that one reason I find the generational chasm between Boomers and Millennials so enervating is that we're being lectured about our lack of Blitz Spirit by a generation who didn't live through it when this era is arguably more analogous to the Gilded Age and Great Depression.

Re: Incorrect Diagnosis in
Record

Hi
Thank you for reaching out. We have reviewed your visit documentation and can confirm that the notes in question were generated using our Al scribe system. It appears the Al tool assigned diagnosis code F32.9 (Depressive disorder, unspecified), while your visit notes and treatment plan reference lumbar disc herniation (back pain).
Per compliance policy, certain Al-generated fields cannot be manually updated by clinic staff and require vendor correction. We have escalated this to our vendor support team and opened ticket # . We'll notify you once we receive

Toy catalog page with colorful piano keys, a hat, and a teddy bear. Text: Wonderful Keys.
Tuneful keys in splendid colors.
Instill a love of song at an early age. What may your little composer hear in their mind's ear? Let it find purchase in the real world! Let them play the Wonderful Keys.

Basic Hat.
Don't mistake this hat for plain. What is a hat but a canvas for the imagination? With this hat, you might find a little gardener, woman of high society, or spy in your house! A simple article with a single red ribbon. It is never too early to learn that a hat mustn't insist upon itself.

Sensible Bear.
The original friend. A bear with a kind face and reasonable proportions. This bear comes with no name. When your child walks with this bear hand-in-paw, when they reach out for its fuzzy body after a stormy dream, when they whisper in its ear that they don't like your chicken a l'orange, they will know what their friend demands to be called.

(perhaps you’d like to buy your child all 3)

One of the core tenets of techno-feudalism to me is that those with means are capable of living free of the tools they use to capture the labour of, and monopolise the time of those who have to use such tools to survive.

β€œOne thing that I try to make clear any time I talk about book bans is that it’s not about the books, it’s about deputizing bigots to do the ugly work of defunding all of our public institutions of learning,” Maggie Tokuda-Hall, a cofounder of Authors Against Book Bans, told me. β€œThe current proliferation of AI that we see particularly in the library and education spaces would be possible at the speed and scale that is happening without the precedent of book bans leading into it. They are very comfortable bedfellows because once you have created a culture in which all expertise is denigrated and removed from the equation and considered nonessential, you create the circumstances in which AI can flourish.”

Justin, a cohost of the podcast librarypunk, told me that the project of offloading cognitive capacity to AI continues apace: β€œPart of a fascist project to offload the work of thinking, especially the reflective kind of thinking that reading, study, and community engagement provide,” Justin said. β€œThat kind of thinking cultivates empathy and challenges your assumptions. It's also something you have to practice. If we can offload that cognitive work, it's far too easy to become reflexive and hateful, while having a robot cheerleader telling you that you were right about everything all along.”

I talked to librarians, authors who have had their books banned, and groups that support them for this article. The glee with which schools, libraries, governments, and companies are replacing human workers and nuance with AI would not be possible w/o the successful war on schools and libraries

AI Is Supercharging the War on Libraries, Education, and Human Knowledge "Fascism and AI, whether or not they have the same goals, they sure are working to accelerate one another."

The long-running ideological war on libraries, education, and government workers is not separate from AI boosterism. It is the same ideological war on human knowledge and expertise. In some cases AI is being used to directly supercharge this effort:

it's less "AI drives people to kill themselves" and more that "tech companies do it, and are indifferent about it". and, bleakly, some journalists seem determined to convince you that the focal point of this story is a high point of engineering rather than a low point of humanity

A neat little quiz game: Is a headline homophobia from the 80s-90s or transphobia from the 2010s-2020s? Because it's all the same bullshit, repackaged for the hate du jour
