A newspaper article with the headline: Conman who invented a country. With a photo of a tropical beach.

A newspaper article with the headline: Conman who invented a country. With a photo of a tropical beach.

An extract from the newspaper article saying:

Rees says he was struck by the sheer audacity of the fraud "The ability to say, I'm going to make up a country' was just extraordinary. And the fact that happened over 200 years ago helped me make sense of what we're living through now. It's easy for us to say 'Oh, we live in unprecedented times of post-truth' but, you know, there's always been charlatans."
There are parallels, he believes, between MacGregor and the crypto scams of today, or Elizabeth Holmes, and her fraudulent blood testing company Theranos. "Even looking at the way Trump and Boris Johnson and Nigel Farage invoke an idea of the past that doesn't really exist," he said. "They're all manipulating and scamming people in different ways."

The Land That Never Was is at The Studio, Festival Theatre, Edinburgh on March 14 and at Tron Theatre, Glasgow, on March 21-22.

"I thought: ‘Where could all this go?' And that led to the idea of someone kidnapping Jeremy Corbyn." Playwright and performer Nick Cassenbaum on his acclaimed comedy about two young, Jewish siblings snatching the former Labour leader. Plus: three shows to see next week.

Here's The Crush Bar's first interview of 2025, with @nickcassenbaum.bsky.social, writer of Revenge: After The Levoyah, which runs @theyardtheatre.bsky.social until Jan 25. A wonderfully silly show about a very serious subject.

Distant Memories of the Near Future Critically-acclaimed intertwining love stories set in a dystopian future. An isolated tech mogul tries to turn love into an algorithm. A jaded consumer confronts their loneliness. An astronaut is trap...

I realise I’m shouting into the void here, but just in case… my show is on for another week and a half! Come and see it.
