Graduate students and contingent faculty working in fields relating to the mission of Kairos (computers and writing, rhetoric-and-technology, etc.) are eligible to be nominated for an award. Recipients can only win once per award but can be nominated/win for a different category in subsequent years.

The Teaching Award is given to a person who uses computers and writing pedagogies in her or his classroom-based practice to promote student learning.

The Scholarship Award is given to a person whose research and scholarship is already excellent and/or also shows future promise for having an impact on our field. The committee is not looking for "the webtext/article of the year" but rather a pattern of excellent scholarship.

The Service Award is given to a person whose work includes activities that promote excellent computers and writing pedagogy, theory, and community building.

Three awards will be given to grad students &/or contingent faculty in computers & writing in the areas of Service, Scholarship, & Teaching. Grad students & contingent faculty work in these areas but face institutional constraints that often undervalue—or flat out don't recognize—the work they do.

Nominees need not be at any particular stage of their career to be considered. The key criterion is whether the nominee exhibits Bill's philosophy of giving.

The Bill Hart-Davidson Mentoring Award honors Bill's legacy by recognizing stellar individuals who (often quietly & with little fanfare) provide key supports that sustain us as teachers, scholars, designers & artists working to further our understanding of rhetoric, technology, and pedagogy.

And he was particularly known for his mentorship and was a force for good in the world, and his philosophy of giving—"when in doubt, give more"—has become an aspirational model for us all.

Bill Hart-Davidson was one of our earliest supporters, serving on the inaugural editorial board until his passing in 2024. He was known for his prescient consideration of future technological challenges and his ability to consider issues from all sides and to bridge gaps between people and ideas.

It underscores the valuable disciplinary contributions of such knowledge-creation & community-building by recognizing a person/project whose active, sustained engagement with rhet/comp or computers & writing using emerging communication tools best exemplifies John's model of a public intellectual.

The John Lovas Award is sponsored by Kairos in recognition and remembrance of John Lovas's contributions to the legitimation of academic knowledge sharing using the emerging tools of Web publishing, from blogging, to newsletters, to social media.

All webtexts take advantage of the Web as a medium to present information in ways that traditional scholarly texts cannot. (Please see our list of past award winners at kairos.technorhetoric.net/awards/pastw... for some excellent examples!)

Webtexts are texts authored specifically for publication on the WWW. They can be scholarly examinations, individual & collaborative reviews, interactive exchanges between scholars, teachers, and practitioners, or extended interviews with leading scholars.

In the spirit of the work of Hawisher & Selfe, preference will be given to students whose race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, class, and/or nationality are underrepresented in C&W. It covers reasonable travel expenses, dorm lodging, & registration.

The HSCF scholarship supports first-time C&W in-person attendees, preferably at the undergrad/early graduate level, who have shown an interest in furthering their studies in a C&W-related field.
