A bunch of pyrosomes at the sea surface in shallow waters.
Pyrosomes are colonies of animals, which even though they look like weird jellyfish, are closer related to us than to jellies! If the conditions are right, they can form massive blooms. They feed on little algae and other organisms in the water and can glow in the dark π‘!

November 17, 2023 was the first day in recorded history when the earth's surface was a whole 2Β°C hotter than pre-industrial times. Yet, there's barely any chatter about this staggering breach.

Our #NSFfunded research uses samples from a cruise I was onboard in 2012! We rescued them from storage, and here we are! Recycle-Reuse-Publish!

Terrible news from a study out today on emperor penguins in the Antarctic during November 2022:
"This is the first recorded incident of a widespread breeding failure of emperor penguins that is clearly linked with large-scale contractions in sea ice extent." π§ͺβοΈ
