kcd sneaks up on you. it's really offputting in so many ways, thematically, mechanically, at first it was honestly pretty tough to slog through for the first chunk of hours. but at some point I broke through to the other side of that and somehow now I'm having such a great time

ALSO henry's voice acting is top notch I literally love every line delivery no matter how mundane, he just sounds so good

the janky combat amd horse riding reinforce this feeling too

so many times in this game I have not felt like I'm embodying henry as the player, but rather I am just some being exerting whatever force I can against henry's conscience to get him to do what I want. and this glitch was me not being able to control him lol honestly a positive & fun experience

I feel like nonnneee of the assumptions I flippantly made about how the game works were proven true, and it is... weirldy refreshing?? jank born of unique vision and ambition??

big budget type games seem to have collectively settled on a shared toolbox of game design solutions that focus on efficiently absorbing the player into the systems. stealth sections work like this. inventory works like that. level ups work like this. etc.

I actually don't prefer RPGs with blank protags for me to author entirely, I like learning about already authored characters. but I feel like henry hits a sweet spot where he has a clear personality of his own but is flexible enough that he'd be able to justify nearly any of my choices

a glitch happened where henry was trapped in "enemy is searching for u" combat state so I couldn't save the game or make him sleep or talk to anyone. I interpreted this as a night long panic attack that he only snapped out of when I (he) accidentally sicced his dog on a random passerby

gacha design philosophy naturally streamlines systems until the game practically plays itself via menus. and then in kcd sometimes I want to read a book but the sun shines on the page and makes it harder to see so I have to physically move henry into the shade to read.

coming off of genshin into this is so jarring it's kind of amazing.

I use the panel tools just to make sure the gutters are consistent and then I lower the transparency and trace them for the actual panel borders so they have a handmade look jkgjds. same with speech balloons. the generated mask stuff is too clunky & doesn't save me enough time to bother learning it
