rebuild of eva was overall underwhelming for the same reason to me though lol. eva mattered to me so much that it altered the course of my life, so I don't say this without respect. 🤷‍♂️

yeah it's something my mind always wanders back to over the years. with recent revisits, with both the games and anime there's more stuff than I remember that doesn't hold up to the test of time, but what does hit does still hit lol. this new game is apparently a reboot

I'll just always be wondering what form my ideal dramatized MMO based media might take. there has to be somewhere on the spectrum from sword art online to straight up just, like, WoW machinima where this perfect form can exist

but I also acknowledge that maybe the series doesn't actually want to explore MMOs specifically so much as it wants to use its trappings to do something else. so that's a simple mismatch of expectations which I won't demand be reconciled.

bc those isms are very interesting, there are many game experiences that can never be found outside of an MMO. so I've always felt very "yes, and?" towards .hack and never fully felt like it has tried to reply to me

.hack has always been for me something that engrosses and fascinates me but never fully satisfies me on its own. every entry always leaves me with a liiittle void of unfulfillment in which I can't help but imagine "what if more consequential acknowledgement of MMO isms"

well ffxi was released only like a month before .hack//infection so, contemporaries yes, shared inspirations likely and shared hardware limitations yes

as usual I'm meandering sorry, a phone keyboard is not a good environment for thinking

but MMOs were booming back then and these days they are not. and I feel like the mmo mechanics in .hack universe have only gotten less believable with each new entry. I mean the mmo trappings in .hack were never really ALL IN, that's not what they're choosing to explore really

so the character designs being spare on detail and the environments and maps being kind of desolate is both consistent with its inspirations and caused by the same hardware limitations as its inspirations lol

thoigh when you're trying to evoke the design language of an MMO especially in a video game rather than 2d animation you naturally have a higher uhhh details budget. I still think original gen .hack games capture that vibe really well as it was contemporary w/ ffxi

Loran from turn-A gundam, one wearing his pilot suit which is a simple white skintight bodysuit with a few bold black and red lines on the torso, and another in his regular outfit which is a linen button up, baggy blue trousers with a patched knee, and suspenders

kiki from kiki's delivery service riding her broom. her outfit is an extremely simple dark purple loose billowy dress, red pumps, and a big red bow in her hair

Link from ocarina of time, child link and adult link both wear a very similar green tunic with a couple of leather belts and big slouchy leather boots, holding sword and shield

claus, lavi, and alvis from last exile. claus and lavi both wear beige coverall style workwear, and alvis wears a simple white dress with buttons down the center, and a red & black collar detail that matches the red & black covers over her pigtails

other potato sack esque designs that come to mind

coincidentally I've been rewatching .hack//sign with a friend and honestly I really love everyone's potato sack outfits. newer entries have a lot more straps and belts and lines and danglies but I will always love a character wearing a potato sack who nonetheless ends up looking iconic

I think I am reluctant to give new OCs names because it somehow finalizes them and that means I'm on the hook like I have to do something with them. and I know in my head that's false so I should just name them and be done with it. eurgh

as for what I have right now, this character spends a chunk of the story ill and in convalescence, which when I'm working on designs ends up making it look like he's allergic to clothes, so I've decided that he may as well just be allergic to clothes cause why not
