More than 70% of the books I read in 2024 came through Libby and the Seattle Public Library. There were a few purchases and audiobooks mixed in for the other 30%.

And this is why reading fiction makes us more empathetic and understanding.

Since I’m new here, let me say: Hi! I’m an Arabic into English translator with passion for fiction, especially science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, alternate history, etc. In translation, I hope to work on books that showcase their Arab roots. Readers understand world building.

I feel the same way about translation. There are more great books out there than we can all get to, there’s no reason not to help and encourage each other.

The secret is that other writers aren't competition; they're peers, colleagues and friends. Someone who reads me is going to read other writers as well; the entire publishing economy is "yes, and." Therefore it does me no harm, and much good, to support other writers and to wish them well.
