The Lake Sturgeon is MB's largest freshwater fish, with a record size of 3 m and 184 kg from the Roseau River in 1903. It was an important source of food for First Nations and early traders and colonists before overexploitation by commercial fishing and habitat alteration decimated its populations.

Three people wearing hard hats and safety goggles apply sheets of wet newspaper to the top of a large fossil slab braced upright by an orange strap in a rocky area.
Two people wearing blue hard hats and face masks apply plaster and burlap to the top of a large fossil slab braced upright by an orange strap in a rocky area.
Two photos. On the left, two blue hat hats show from the other side of a large fossil slab with a plaster-coated top portion in a rocky area. On the right, two people wearing hard hats from behind as they work to carefully remove excess rock from a large fossil slab braced upright in front of them. In the distance part of a large body of water can be seen.
Two photos. On the left, a helicopter transporting a large fossil slab in a net attached to a long line next to a rocky cliffside against a clear blue sky. On the right, looking down at a large fossil encased in plaster and wrapped in roped padded with pool noodles. The slab sits on an open net on a gravel surface.
Once a fossil is discovered, one of the main hurdles is extraction! One useful technique is to create a plaster "fossil jacket" to adapt and conform to the unique fossil. This creates a βshieldβ, and can even help to pull the fossil out of the ground. #FossilFriday

#DYK that MΓ©tis politician Louis Riel is often called the founding father of Manitoba? Born in St. Boniface, MB, Riel led the MΓ©tis Resistance, formed a provisional government, and drafted a List of Rights that formed the basis for the Manitoba Bill when the province entered Confederation in 1870.

Behold the Shrew Tube! The bones of this Northern Short-tailed Shrew have been articulated and sealed in a glass vial like a ship in a bottle. With the skeleton fixed in a life-like pose, we can see how the animalβs bones would have been positioned beneath the skin and muscle in real life.
