Pair of black and white, long-necked diving birds with pointed, yellow-green bills, that of the male (left) longer and heavier than that of the female (right).

Western grebes are unusual among birds because males have longer and thicker beaks than the females. The larger beaks of males allow them to capture larger items than the females as they dive for food in Manitoba's southern marshes. The difference in prey size might avoid competition for food!

The cone of an ancient cypress tree fossilized in a brownish-red rock.

This fossil cypress cone comes from the late Cretaceous rock layers of Drumheller, AB. The cone is stubby and rounded, like in many of its living relatives. Cypress trees peaked in diversity in the age of dinosaurs, and were likely an important food source for herbivorous dinosaurs. #FossilFriday
