It becomes more important to be able to filter out the proliferation of crap. I think it pays to have a degree of cynicism as well.
For some of our "bigger" holidays we have used a specialist agency. The advisor has been to the places, and with the info they give,you know whether it's for you or not

Sometimes it is a bit of a lottery when choosing a location. Sounds like you could get away from it into the mountains though.
Pre-internet you just picked somewhere out of a holiday brochure - none of this scrolling through thousands of reviews from a needle in a haystack search term 😀
