In practice, what it means right now is that red states like Indiana and Florida will get a free pass to gerrymander racial minorities into oblivion, even if their maps are blatantly illegal and openly racist. That gives a huge advantage to Republicans because in many states, their one neat trick for gaining a partisan advantage is diluting representation for racial minorities to create more safe GOP districts. And so they can now go full steam ahead, changing the rules, rigging the maps, hampering democracy, without worrying about any pesky litigation that will cause for them. That is the sign of a party that’s desperate to cling on to power because it is losing popular support.

We need to talk about the massive loophole that the Supreme Court just carved into election law over the shadow docketβ€”giving states a free pass to enact patently unconstitutional voting rules within nearly *one year* of an election. A stunning new limit on judicial review. slate.com/news-and-pol...

In her dissent, Judge Pan says the emerging view of executive power by Trump and his backers in the courts "concentrates excessive power in the President and thus paves the way to autocracy." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Quite right. The president and the "branch" that the president sets up - WH staff, CEA, etc. - are merely extensions of the president. By contrast, Exec Branch departments and agencies are set up by the president *and* Congress and are creatures of both. That's the US system. Always has been.

4. That’s when Tree characterized the September boat bombing as bigger than murder or a war crime. β€œThis policy of murdering civilians goes much deeper in this administration. … This was a conspiracy to commit murder and that’s how it should be investigated,” he said.

Supreme Court at any time may issue 2 orders on its emergency docket that will greatly affect how Americans live over the next few years: one on legality of national guard troops in American cities and one on whether States like Texas can re-redistrict and get away with it on timing grounds for 2026

My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.

Every Democrat going on air should take the first question and then say something like β€œBefore I answer that I need to express my outrage and disgust at the president’s bigoted and vulgar insults about the Somali people. There is something seriously wrong with him. He is a sick man.”

This is in the weeds, but please be reminded that this gross usurpation of the Institute of Peace was made possible by a Supreme Court order from the shadow docket in an unrelated case, which then three Trump judges on the D.C. Circuit ran with to allow this usurpation to proceed.

Democratic politicians need to stop accepting Trump’s white nationalist premise that immigration is bad and proudly and loudly make a positive case for why America’s identity and history as a nation of immigrants is so important.

For anyone who knows anything about genocides and the incitement of genocidal violence, this is the kind of hair-raising stuff you find in transcripts of testimony before special tribunals.

Robert Pape, a professor at University of Chicago who has studied political violence for 30 years, said such language from the Trump administration was dangerous.

β€œThey’re not just like nasty metaphors β€” they’re especially dehumanizing metaphors,” Mr. Pape said. β€œβ€˜Garbage.’ You’re not thinking of something that is human, you’re thinking of it as something that can be easily thrown away, so that is exactly the kind of metaphor we have just found for really decades is likely to increase support for violence.”

It was heartening to see University of Chicago professor Robert Pape, an expert on political violence, say in the NYT story that this is the kind of rhetoric that leads to violence. 3/🧡

There are 75,977 people born in Somalia who are now citizens of the United States, including those specific people.

He is talking about US citizens. He is talking about *us*.

The truth is that none of us are garbage, and the job of the US president is to represent all of us.

We, the people.

And there's a million things Jeffries *can* say, like:

"Pete Hegseth had best remember that the GOP won't be in charge forever. After Democrats take back the House next year, we will investigate every last allegation of criminality. I note that the penalties for war crimes are especially severe."

Jeffries says not to expect Democrats to pursue Hegseth impeachment over boat strikes "Republicans will never allow articles of impeachment to be brought to the floor," he said.

For some reason Democratic leaders seem to prefer telling voters what they won’t be able to do, rather than what they’d like to do.

If Hegseth ordered a war crime and lied about it, shouldn’t Ds try for impeachment? Put Rs on the spot. They might get a few defections.

This is insane. Any material a prof thinks is necessary but isn’t for formal licensing has to get the signoff of the chair, then dean, then provost?

This is an absolutely mockery of academic freedom.

I feel like Texas Tech HAS to lose its accreditation for this, no? It’s preposterous.

Walker said he would have reported the alleged violation to federal authorities β€œif I thought that there was anyone of integrity in Washington that would follow through on my accusation and actually cause someone to lose their job over it.”

Just to be clear: armed government agents are allowed to wear masks, balaclavas, and glasses that completely hide their identities as they disappear people off streets and out of public places, but students can't wear masks while protesting even in approved "time, manner, and place".
