I’ve followed Dana’s work for years, and her research on social movements, activism, climate policy & politics has never been more relevant. If you, like me, are wondering how to reset, reorient, and stay effective despite political headwinds, this conversation is for you!

I learned to love MSG on a trip to Laos. A friend gave me a 10-page research article on it and somehow magically my β€œMSG headaches” spontaneously disappeared!

Of all the awful, terrible things, this one still tops the list for me. I find it completely stomach-turning.

Surreal to live through a coup in my country.... for anyone working in education, it's time for some deep reflection. There's a lot we can and should be doing differently, across K-12 and college, and especially in all the online spaces where learning takes place, consciously and unconsciously.

β€œβ€¦every major technological transformation in the US, from electric cars to Google to the iPhone, can trace its roots back to basic science research once funded by the federal government.”

P.S. Sorry, belatedly realized your chart only shows mostly Western countries and my rant chiefly related to global data/poverty in poorer countries!

I have very little respect for people who only study β€œpoverty” from their computer screens. I recommend the work of economists like Jean Dreze who live in an Indian slum. Much more enlightening.

c) Most of the gains have come from one single country (China) that skews this trend dramatically d) most poor carry crippling levels of private debt (to moneylenders) that is an overwhelming and virtually uncounted factor in poverty data, while profoundly shaping the lived experience of the poor

22.02.2025 22:09 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Some small facts: a) Older data in these trends is unreliable as capacity to support oneself off the land has changed dramatically for the poor over the decades b) this reductive metric is a highly questionable one for really understanding the complex conditions and experiences of poverty …

22.02.2025 22:09 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

As someone who studied poverty deeply for my PhD (I attempted to recreate poverty rate estimate in one very poor village in Sri Lanka using established methods), I recommend not believing the simplistic story this tells. It’s reproduced everywhere and honestly does a great disservice to the poor.

New data on global poverty What does it show?

Rep Raskin has been great. Rep Ocasio-Cortez has been great. And Rep Frost and Rep Crockett. Senator Murphy. Maybe no one knew exactly what to do. But such people laid down a clear marker. Let’s respect these and other elected federal representatives who stood out these first few weeks.

I like the point but also worry when we tout the successes of one illiberal regime to put down another... our project is different, right? Participatory democracy, economy that serves public interest and the protection of the natural world, freedom from tyranny, racism etc.
